I have been reading quite a few books about the crusades and fell in love with El Cid by Fitzhenry. Started this book right after El Cid because the reviews say it's a wonderful story for youth and adults. While the story is certainly inspiring, the writing style is very juvenile. I thought at first it may just be because I had just experienced the exceptional writing of Fitzhenry, but even after giving it some time, it was very difficult to read this book with respect. The author no doubt has wonderful intentions, however, in perhaps the attempt to appeal to a younger audience by making the story more along their vocabulary base, it really distracted from the beauty of this man's life and struggles and journey to surrender. I was waiting for the word 'dude' to appear, that's how casual the language in this book is. I was hoping to have my 15 and 13 year old sons read this but I'm afraid they will be put off by the 'cheasiness' of the text. It's something I would recommend for and 8-11 year old only. As an adult, it was an extremely simple read and the overall story is good but be aware that this is a rather juvenile writing despite the gorgeous artwork on the cover.
This book is the second of Susan Peek's novels for teens that I had the privilege to read. Immediately, I was hooked, as I was with Crusader King. As a teacher, I happily recommended it to a number of my students. Those who struggle a bit with their own tempers and other faults, found in Camillus a lovable, imitable intercessor. May Mrs. Peek continue to shed light on the lives of our amazing saints, and through her telling of their stories inspire generations of readers to pursue sanctity themselves!
This is one of the best saint books in our school library! Not only does it keep the readers interested, but it shows in a compelling way how we can overcome our fallen human nature and reform our lives, even when we have serious faults. There is hope for everyone, and this book is a huge inspiration and a great read for everyone!

WHAT A STORY! IT SHOWS THAT WITH DETERMINATION ANY OF US COULD TURN OUR LIFE AROUND IF IT IS INDEED NECESSARY.HE WAS A SOLDIER WHO FOUGHT IN WARS FOR MONEY. HE WAS ALSO A GAMBLER, AND AN ALCOHOLIC. BUT IN THE END HE TOOK CARE OF THE SICK TO THE POINT THAT IT GREW TO THE EXTENT THAT IT IS CREDITED THAT IT WAS THE FOUNDING OF THE RED CROSS. HE WENT FROM THE LOW LIFE TO BECOME SAINT. DE LELLIS INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!!!.
