Winning Balance: What I’ve Learned So Far about Love, Faith, and Living Your Dreams, by Shawn Johnson

Review

Olympic gold-medalist gymnast Johnson has written an endearing memoir of her rise to winning three silver medals and one gold at age 16. Every bit as interesting are her accounts of coping with the aftermath of fame, both as an Olympic champion and as a reality-TV star on Dancing with the Stars. Among the details: slips on the balance beam in front of Olympic judges, spats with parents, learning to wear heels, and realizing that what looks good on TV―makeup and hair extensions―can look strange in person. Johnson’s “balanced” beginnings seem almost too idyllic at the start of the book, but as her struggle toward Olympic glory plays out, we come to appreciate the sturdy values of parents who knew instinctively to honor her high energy and uniqueness. Johnson emerges as a powerhouse champion with a winning attitude, always making the best of circumstances, even an injury that could have ended her career. Her book celebrates both family love and faith in God as wellsprings of strength. A solid offering from a woman wiser than her years suggest she might be. (Booklist)

From the Inside Flap

What the World Is Saying about Shawn Johnson“Perhaps the best gymnast in the world—a compact, powerful package who is just as at home on the beam and bars as she is in the vault and floor events. . . . Shawn Johnson has an easy smile and confidence and rarely betrays the nervousness she says she feels at every competition.”—Time magazine“She packs the power of someone twice her size yet somehow manages to still look dainty. She tumbles without fear, whether it’s on the floor or up on the balance beam, and makes the toughest tricks look easy. She’s the type of gymnast one can’t help but watch.”—ESPN.com“A powerful tumbler and nerveless competitor . . . Johnson smiles and bubbles while competing— a 4' 9" firecracker.”—Sports Illustrated“Not only an extraordinary athlete, but also something altogether more profound and worthy of cele- bration: an uncommon human being . . . a young woman whose gifts stretch well beyond sports.”—The Christian Science Monitor

When I think of Shawn I think of a great athlete with a bubbly personality and a big smile. As a gymnastics fan I would've liked to read more on her dealings with other athletes, coaches, us gymnastic staff, travels, etc. I realize she was still competing while she worked on this book so maybe that played a factor. She did share some stories of her adventure in Beijing and they were fun tales.I did find the 2nd half of the book (post Olympics) surprising and honest, a lot of highs and lows for a young woman. Although I think she is probably 15-20 years too young to write a memoir on life lessons this is a decent book for a 20 year old athlete and is a fairly entertaining read.

I have always been a huge fan of Shawn Johnson even before all her fame from the Olympics. I follow gymnastics pretty heavily since I am a former gymnast/diver and she has always been one of my favorite gymnasts to watch. When I heard she had an autobiography about her coming out I had to get it. This book did not disappoint, it was interesting to hear about what she thought about the Olympics and post Olympics and training and just really about her life outside of gymnastics. I recommend to anyone who likes Shawn Johnson and wants to know more about her rather than just her Olympic gymnastics career. It also sends a lot of positive vibes for people to overcome difficulties in their lives.

Because my daughter is a competitive gymnast, I knew this was a book we'd have to own as soon as I discovered it. Our family remembers well rooting for Shawn in the 2008 gymnastics. Watching her smile and intensity. The way she sparkled as she competed. When I handed my daughter this book, I was curious whether it would resonate with her or be one she started and then put down. The pages flipped pretty fast as she learned more about Shawn and her journey. The book pairs her journey with her spiritual journey. It's told in a way that perfectly targets teens. The style is conversational taking you behind the scenes in the events in her life. Each chapter also ends with a Lesson I've Learned: a nugget of truth that applies to all of us.This is a sports memoir with spiritual applications. A worthwhile read, and one I look forward to reading with my daughter next time.

Shawn's story is an inspiring journey for anyone. Very few realize how hard girls train to become an Olympic gymnast, and how coveted those spots on the team really are. The highlight for me is reading about the aftermath of being an Olympic medalist and figuring out what to do next... and these girls are so young to be faced with such big life choices. I mean, how many of us fulfill our life's dream by the age of 16 and are faced with what to do next? Shawn has made the transition beautifully and has embraced the Lord and her family and friends to lift her during the tough times. We can all learn something special from this spunky yet eloquent young lady who won our hearts in Beijing with her performance, and her sportsmanship... Truly a Golden Flower!

I found this book interesting and easy to read. It was a good book overall. I have always liked watching gymnastics, although it makes me nervous. I wasn't very familiar with Shawn Johnson because I didn't see much of the Olympics the year she was there. I knew of her, and was curious to know her story. My daughter recently started taking gymnastics classes and I happened to come across this book. I wasn't sure if I'd like it, but it was a good read. I would recommend it to people who are curious about the world of gymnastics, or who are fans of this gymnast.

Shawn, though young, has packed a whole lifetime of wisdom into this book. She has been through some tough things and worked hard. I loved seeing her win on "Dancing with the Stars" and enjoyed reading how that came to be. She has a "what I've learned" box for every chapter and she seems to have remained remarkably unscathed from being in the public limelight. She also gave good insight into what it takes to be a winner--ATTITUDE is a great deal of it! Her parents provided a rock for her to balance on in her career--well done!

I was so pleased with my purchase because of it's price, amount of time that it arrived with another of my purchases which was nice because I only had to expect one package. The condition of the book was good as was described. I'd recommend this book to anyone like me who loves ballet, figure skating, or gymnastics and as a figure skater myself I learn from both ballet and gymnastics for grace, flexablity, and much more and what better what to learn than to read a biography of a successful athlete.

I read this first to see if it's appropriate for my tweenish daughter, a gymnastic fan, and I feel it is. It is NOT primarily a memoir of her gymnastics training, experiences, or career, so if you are looking for that, this isn't it. She does of course talk about it, but it doesn't provide a lot of details on the training or moves itself. Her emphasis is her personal journey to date, and the second half is all post-Olympics, talking about her Dancing With The Stars experience, and her personal struggles to make sense of her life post-gymnastics. She talks a lot about her Christian faith in this part of the book, but I didn't feel it was proselytizing or judgmental. She is young, so it does seem immature compared to most memoirs- but most memoirs aren't written when someone is 20! For the short life she has had, she has done a lot, and she has a great optimism and heart to her. So if you are a fan, and/or a young girl or woman, you will probably really appreciate this book.

More than a baseball book, this is really a story about life and how to live it! Posnanski does a masterful job relating the experiences of Buck O'Neil in a world that could have caused him to become cynical. Here is a tribute to how positive attitude can conquer life's difficulties. This was especially significant for those of us in our waning years to whom baseball was summer! It was the only game and it was played by every American regardless of race or ethnicity. This book is a must read for everyone who respects the game and those who loved to play it. Heck, it's a must read for everyone who loves a great story!

I could belabor an in-depth review, but I urge you to immerse yourself in this amazing work of love. Posnanski accomplished the miraculous: he was with this book but not of it. Unlike so many sports bios that worship the subject (or the writer), Posnanski puts all ego aside and takes us on a journey through Buck's eyes - eyes that have seen much, seen the breadth and depth of the U.S. I went shopping for a book on the history of the Negro Leagues, but all were dry histories. Then Joe P. introduced me to Buck, and I found riches that transcended baseball. This book digs deep into so many subjects:, I would use it in a sports management class, a history class, a journalism class (not just sports journalism), a literature class, a sociology class...However, I just happen to be a professor, so please indulge me that list. Most of all, if you want to read because you love baseball, African-American U.S. history, events current and 50 years past, grab & eat this book. It doesn't matter if you dislike baseball or sports or biographies because this book uses these aspects as part of the overall vision of a life well-lived.Most of all, if you want to know how to live a virtuous, positive, genuine life that touches all you meet, then meet Buck O'Neill. There are angels all around us, and Buck (and Joe P.) is blessed to be a blessing.

This book is not just about baseball or just about Buck O'Neil. This is a story of people and their flaws and quirks, of what it means to be an American, of hope. It is not heartwarming in the schmaltzy sense of the word. It uses baseball and the story of Buck O'Neil to take an unflinching look at many hard things of life and yet still find joy in the midst of it. Beautiful prose and even occasional poetry are constant through the book, much like the game of baseball itself. If you are a baseball fan or simply want a poignant story, read this. You won't regret it.

"The Soul of Baseball" is a passionate, perceptive, playful, pleasant, poetic, poignant and provocative book based on a year in the life of 93-year-old Buck O'Neil. It is a wonderful wedding of author and subject. Buck O'Neil was a good baseball player, but his "superpower" seemed to be his ability to make people feel good. Joe Posnanski is up to the task of writing about so worthy a subject. He is observant without being cynical. He is lyrical without being sentimental. I loved Buck's scouting report: "His heart was willing, but his rump was gone." The book is full of humor, oral history and folksy philosophy. The only time I thought the author was trying too hard to be cute was when he tried to make a joke about Arlen Specter. The joke would have been funny if it was about some other senators, but it didn't really apply to Specter and fell flat. Almost all the rest of the book was smooth baseball jazz.

All you can say is what a kind man. This book is the best book on baseball I've every read. It's the best because it doesn't have numbers and stats. It indeed captures not only the Soul of Baseball but the Soul of a Great Person. If you are ever n KC be sure to go to 16th and Vine and tour the Negro League Museum. Hopefully you'll get to met Mr. Bob Kendricks. Tell him hello.

A beautiful book about a beautiful man. Joe Posnanski captures the essence of Buck O'Neil's positive attitude and inner strength which overcame life's difficult and challenging circumstances. Buck did not allow bitterness to enter his heart. He overcame injustice by counting his blessings and persevering. The book is very well written. Hard to put down. Familiar stories about Buck's life in baseball are brought new life through Posnanski's writing. The author does this great man justice by showing us Buck in intimate detail. Buck loved life. He loved people. He loved baseball. One cannot read this and not love Buck. The best of the books about Buck O'Neil.

This is a book about love for fellow human beings, disguised as a book about baseball. There is as much love in Buck O'Neil's heart as the entire New Testament. A wonderful man that I wish I would have known.Young men, read this book. Learn a little history, and some appreciation for what you have. Author and subject were a perfect match. Let's hope 2020 sees an injustice corrected..

Awesome book, not just about baseball but about life. Highly recommended. Probably my favorite baseball book, if not then it's gotta be in the top 3. As a Royals fan, I'm used to hearing about Buck O'Neil and have visited the Negro Leagues Museum in KC a couple times so that probably makes it even better for me.
