I really enjoyed all three volumes of Walt Larimore's Bryson City books. I bought them as a birthday present for my mother after reading an excerpt from the book in a Randy Alcorn blog, and she enjoyed them so much she encouraged me to read them as well. I am a nurse and have shared his stories with my coworkers. I love how Walt shares his faith openly which is so antithetical to today's worldly standards. Very interesting stories of being a back country doctor.

I love Bryson City we go upto twice a year. This book is full of many interesting stories. I enjoyed the book plus it’s from my favorite happy place :)

The last book in the series on Bryson City. It continued to be funny and a delight...until near the end. Then, what a shock to find out why the family left their beloved town near Smoky Mountain National Park. These books were enlightening not only about a young doctor's trials and tribulations, but they were also very descriptive about an area we visit every year. I learned more in these books about Smoky Mountain NP than I ever had from brochures and pamphlets scattered throughout visitors centers and businesses in the vicinity. It was a personal tour "into the park."

Even as I was waiting to receive the final book in the Bryson City triology, I was anticipating more exciting adventures told by the multitalented Dr. Larimore. Book three opens with a mystery surrounding his daughter Kate, now grown and starting a successful career in speechwriting. Kate has defied the odds and by God's grace she is a walking, talking miracle. But there is a piece of her life that remains hidden to the reader as Bryson City Secrets opens. From then on, the reader is carried along through Dr. Larimore's experiences in his medical practice and family life much the same way as in the first two volumes. Bryson City Tales: Stories of a Doctor's First Year of Practice in the Smoky Mountains,Bryson City Seasons. Yet, the back story is always emerging. Finally, the mystery is revealed, as well as the fact that the time has come for change in the Larimore family.Bryson City Secrets leaves its readers wanting more, praising God for the miracles in the lives of those we've met in Bryson City and, of course, wishing only the best future for the Larimore family.Bravo to Walt Larimore, MD for such inspirational, humorous and spiritual writing that encourages all who read to never give up.

I have enjoyed all of the Bryson City books written by Walt Larrimore. These stores cover a period of time when he was in medical practice in Bryson City, North Carolina several years ago. We meet the local people from the area, and see some of the dilemmas that arose during his practice there.The book is very easy to read and entertaining.

This is the third in a series. Ending was surprise and somewhat out of character with the whole series, but his writing and stories of being a GP in the Smokey mountains of North Carolina are wonderful.

In “Epic Encounters: Culture, Media, and U.S. Interests in the Middle East, 1945-2000”, Melani McAlister argues, “Cultural products such as films or novels contributed to thinking about both values and history in two ways. First, they helped to make the Middle East an acceptable area for the exercise of American power. Second, they played a role in representing the Middle East as a stage for the production of American identities – national, racial, and religious” (pg. 3). McAlister further argues, “After World War II, political and cultural conditions in the United States produced a post-Orientalist model of representing the Middle East for American audiences. These new representational dynamics were not always in the service of U.S. state power; in certain cases they explicitly contested the presumptions of official U.S. policies. But even the official rhetoric of nationalist expansionism worked to establish the United States as different from the old colonial powers, and it did so in part by fracturing the East-West binary on which traditional Orientalism had depended” (pg. 40). McAlister draws upon the theories of Edward Said while interjecting a greater focus on gender and race into traditional studies of foreign policy.Examining film, McAlister argues, “The biblical epics [of the 1950s and 1960s] made representations of the religious history of the Middle East central to a discourse of U.S. ‘benevolent supremacy’ in world affairs” and that “biblical epics should be read not simply as antitotalitarian narratives but as anticolonial ones, situated at the moment when the United States took over from the European colonial nations the role of a preeminent world power” (pg. 46). In terms of race, “in the 1950s and 1960s, the conflict between Israel and its Arab neighbors took on a new salience in African American cultural politics. In part, the energized significance of the Middle East had to do with decolonization” (pg. 85). In this way, “Between 1955 and 1972, a potent combination of religious affiliation, anticolonial politics, and black nationalist radicalism turned claims upon the Middle East into a rich resource within African American communities. For both Christians and Muslims, religious culture made salient not only ancient histories, but also contemporary political events in the region, particularly the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian Arabs for control over territory” (pg. 86).Looking to museum exhibits, McAlister writes, “Examining 'The Treasures of Tutankhamun' as a diverse set of representations, it suggests that newspaper and television news stories, T-shirts and trinkets, books and magazine articles, museum catalogs, and the exhibit itself created ‘Tut’ as a significant cultural phenomenon. The Tut phenomenon was striking for two reasons: first, for the intimate relationships it forged between the high-culture world of museum exhibits and the popular traffic in celebrity icons, and second, for the way it became a site of struggle over both the nature of American world power and the domestic politics of race and gender” (pg. 125-126). Further, “Tut’s presence as a commercial sensation in the twentieth century linked him to commodity culture; like the department store Orientalism at the turn of the century, Tut’s presence enabled the marketing of everyday consumer goods as exotica” (pg. 150).Moving to the late Cold War, McAlister writes, “In the 1980s…the discourse of terrorist threat developed in new and important ways as public reactions to the Iran hostage crisis were staged in the speeches of policymakers, in television news reports, and in the activities of communities around the country. These accounts brought Americans, rather than Israelis, into the primary position as victims of – and eventually fighters against – terrorism” (pg. 199). She continues, “As the discourse of terrorist threat developed, during the Iran crisis and after, it helped to construct a subtle but crucial change in the imagined geography of the Middle East, a change that was marked by a reclassification: ‘Islam’ became highlighted as the dominant signifier of the region, rather than oil wealth, Arabs, or Christian Holy Lands” (pg. 200).McAlister concludes, “In the period after 1945, I have argued, there was a move away from the distinctly modern concern with the construction of a unified (white, masculine) national and racial identity toward a construction of the national subject as disjointed and diverse, gendered both masculine and feminine, and ultimately multiracial” (pg. 270). Finally, “The Middle East was mapped for Americans through the intersecting deployment of cultural interests and political investments. In constructing this history, [McAllister has] aimed to intervene in several ways in the current scholarship in cultural studies, American history, and colonial discourse studies” (pg. 270).

An incredibly good book. McAlister dissects and analyzes the representations of the Middle East in various media -- movies, news, plays, books, etc. -- and their relationships to the projection of US global power and the shaping of US cultural identity since the end of World War II. As she puts it, her goal is to address the absence of culture from discussions of the history of US imperialism, the absence of empire from discussions of US culture, and the absence of the US from discussions of postcolonial imperialism.Among her subjects, all of which she treats deftly and with attentive detail, are: Amiri Baraka's "A Black Mass," the Israeli military raid on Entebbe, the 1977 John Frankenheimer movie "Black Friday," the tour of King Tutankhamen's artifacts through the United States during 1977-1978, Hal Lindsey's "The Late Great Planet Earth," the rise of the Moral Majority, the Iran hostage crisis of 1979-1980 and its obsessive coverage in the US media, the prevalence of military revenge movies in the 1980s like "Navy Seals" and "Delta Force," Betty Mahmoody's book "Not without My Daughter," and the Gulf War.I found particularly compelling her discussion of 1950s biblical epics, such as "Ben-Hur" and "The Ten Commandments." The recent controversy over "The Passion of the Christ" is put into definite context when you see how "The Ten Commandments" was received (and what purposes it served) when it was released in 1956.

I chose this book to pair it with Natasha Zaretsky's book "No Way Home" for my final paper and it helped me to make the connection between how American Foriegn Policy is formed by way of the media and the American public interest in the Middle East Region. To learn more about how American policies are shaped regarding the Middle East region, I suggest that you read this book.

Can I just say how amazing this book is? I realize that sounds forced or programmed but it isn't. I have been wanting to do meat rabbits for a few years now. I have been talking to people who have them, reading online, doing everything I can to prepare myself. My husband, who is a avid hunter, kept shooting my idea down-- no pun intended. Finally, after a third year of rabbit hunting and coming home empty handed, he said, let's look into it. Well, id done all that. So after sharing everything I learned, we went to get rabbits and he was like a kid at Christmas. From there, my interest turned into a continious burst of excitement for him and me-- since I no longer had to do this alone, lol.No matter how much research and talking a person does, though, there are still things I have no clue about until they become an issue. That's when I went looking for a book.I've bought Storey books before and liked them but I still prepared myself to find a bunch of things out that I already knew. In fact, usually a book is filled more with "I already know that" than, " oh! I didn't know that!".This one wasn't like that at all. I mean, a few things I few but a wealth of info that I didn't. For example, I didn't know about Florida Whites and while I have no proof, I think a couple of rabbits I bought this past weekend who the owner said was New Zealand's, but after getting them home and seeing them compared to my NZ's and seeing how tiny they are compared to them, I am now wondering if they are FW's. Rare in my area-- if I can find them at all, I think it's possible people would confuse the two.Still unsure about those marbles to check a Doe and if she is pregnant, and if my Does took or not-- having to wait till they pull fur--this book gave me a few more ideas on how to tell.Not to mention Hutch ideas, watering examples, DISEASES and a ton of possibilities on making some money doing this-- pros and cons of both-- like Labs ( not doing but appreciate the info), selling fur and what fur sells best, seeking to commercial meat places verses processing myself and selling local -- well, I appreciated ALL of these!And the couple of recipes in the back-- wish there were more-- be sure to thank your wife for that!I'm sure this book will continue to be helpful and it's one of few I will never regret buying!!!!! Thank so much!

I have used Storey's guides for all of our homesteading start up projects and have found them immensely helpful. Bees? YES. Poultry? YES. Ducks & Geese? YES. Rabbits? Meh. This one I wasn't so thrilled with. The author is very focused on raising rabbits for breeding and selling (commercially it seems), not on meat rabbits (our focus) or pets (a lot of other people's focus). Right off the bat, I was skeptical because he is a proponent of regular dosing of his stock with antibiotics and other medications (antibiotic resistance, anyone? I'm a biologist and that is a bad choice.) I ended up getting on BackyardHerds website and asking many questions there because I felt like they were not answered in this book. Found some awesome people who helped me for free much more than the book.

This book has a lot of useful info, and it's a good source for those getting started with rabbits. However, some of it did not suit my preferences for "quality of life" enhancement. The main reason I want to raise our own food is to get away from supporting the factory farming industry [buying from local, small farmers is just too expensive for us] and all its cruelty. At best, factory farming is just warehousing of animals, and at worst, it's brutal at times, in the pursuit of profit.As weird as it sounds, I treat my meat rabbits like pets, right up until the time they are processed to become food. I am still able to make the choices of who goes to processing, but I do love them all. I want them to be happy and enjoy their lives, which for me, requires more than an "adequate" sized wire cage with food and water. I want mine to have stuff in their cages to play with, chew on, climb on, etc., as well has giving them time on pasture. I pet them and talk to them, and the breeding age rabbits all have names. That's just the way I like to do things; others do it differently and I respect that.With this book, it's more about what to feed, how much, what size cages you need for what size rabbits, etc. Still, the book has lots of solid basic care info that new rabbit raisers really need to know. It's a worthwhile read before you get your first rabbits - many rabbits die from well meaning but uneducated owners, so avoid that by learning as much as you can about what not to do before bringing those bunnies home.

Absolutely the best rabbit book around! This guy has been raising rabbits since he was a little kid and he really knows his stuff. He has a wonderful concept (and I haven't seen this anywhere else) for building and setting up rabbit cages. He talks about things (like raising earth worms beneath the rabbit cages) that other people don't even mention. He has excellent advise about the nuts-and-bolts of raising rabbits (how often to breed, how to kindle in cold climates, how to feed, etc). If I could only have ONE rabbit book this would be it. And be sure to get the most recent edition (I think it was published in 2009 or 2010). It really is different (more updated and better) than previous editions. Also, the best price I found for this book was on Amazon.com.

This book used to be required reading, but it is woefully outdated and has lost relevance. The central themes are still sound but the stale references to companies and industries from the 80s/90s and nods to then-'emerging' technologies and services that are now old school is all just distracting and, to be honest, boring. Since this book arrived and wowed the progressive thinkers of 20+ years ago we have all gone through Lean Start-ups, self-disruption, Red-Blue Ocean, etc. - this is all Innovation 101 now. His hardware and manufacturing-centric world has been replaced with software, content, and services - and, frankly, the models have changed a bit. I was initially encouraged to see the book has been reprinted in 2016 but it seems like they updated little to nothing. It is a shame - the core lessons are still valid but his delivery has lost context in a much-evolved world.

The Innovator’s Dilemma is an interesting work written by Clayton M. Christensen in 1997. The book seeks to explain why certain businesses are successful in their ventures and why other firms fail in response to new technologies. Christensen tries to explain throughout the book why some firms, when new technologies enter the market, fail either because they adapt the new technology or not. The author initially believes that new technologies are constantly emerging and all businesses must continually adapt to stay relevant. However, this proves to be false as in his studies not all firms that ignored the new technology failed while not all firms that adapted the new technology succeeded. This is the fundamental dilemma in the book, and Christensen’s main purpose is to figure out a recipe for managers to follow to stay successful when disruptive technologies enter the market. Most of the book revolves around the study of the disk drive market since they were first developed in the 1950’s. The disk drive industry was important because technology was rapidly advancing and smaller drives were being released within a few years of each other. Many of the established firms often chose not to invest in the next smaller disk drive because they did not have enough memory to meet their standards. However, emerging firms would find new markets for the use of smaller drives and also find ways to make them more powerful, eventually drive the existing firms out of business. Christensen eventually concludes that successful businesses often collapse, despite having good managers, because they fail to find the new markets for disruptive technologies while instead supplying current customers with what they currently need. The goal of the book is to educate people in the business world about how new technologies affect firms and to provide a new way of thinking about disruptive technologies. The end of the piece brings the conclusion that leading firms almost always have set technologies that work well for their current customers, choosing not to invest in new technologies because what they are currently doing is working, current customers do not want change. That is, until new technologies grow to be superior than their predecessors. Christensen does a fantastic job in making his point clear as he provides a plethora of studies across different markets to support his claims. The first half of the book is essentially a detailed history of the disk drive industry that has multiple examples of different firms both choosing to invest in smaller drives and continuing to use their already established, larger drives. He uses this information to create hypothesis’ about why these firms made their decisions and whether it lead them to success or not. Essentially, the author’s process in writing the book is to look at different industries that had disruptive technologies and discover what trends lead to success and what trends lead to failure. He spends a lot of time focusing on a single industry, the disk drive. However, he does bring up several other markets including the mechanical excavator, steel, computer, and discount retailer industries. This variety of different scopes enhances his argument, especially since he sees similar trends across all of these different markets. Many of his examples include established firms choosing not to adopt new technologies because it does not fit their current business motives, but then later being replaced by firms that dared to find new markets for the new technology. His claims are definitely unbiased as all of his conclusions are drawn from the hard evidence that he compiles and delivers to the reader throughout the book about the different firms in those industries. It is almost impossible to disagree with his conclusion since all of his evidence accurately backs up his claims. Personally, I enjoyed reading the book but mostly because it appeals to my interests. As a young business major, the book is intended for me to read and may directly pertain to my own future. However, this book would be challenging to read for the average person that is not interested in business. The book is confusing at some times and is clearly designed for educated readers with a basic understanding of the business world. I would say that the book is a must-read for managers of a company that may be facing disruptive technologies in their industry as it does provide direct advice for people of that demographic. It is a book that I would certainly recommend to my peers within my major. Christensen does a decent job in making the book engaging. Some of the chapters where he is providing data are dry and confusing, but he does always provide a summary at the end of chapters to keep the reader focused. A lot of the book is also repetitive in regards to the disk drive industry and the author reiterating his claims about disruptive technologies. Nonetheless, the book is overall definitely a success for its purpose. There is plenty of evidence throughout the book that prove his claims in real-world situations. His main ideas about why firms choose to serve current customers with current technology rather than try to force new technologies on customers also makes logical sense, given the customer-centric market that is present in today’s society. His complex conclusion that disruptive technologies succeed only when they find a market that does not currently exist is confusing, but is definitely supported with his evidence. In conclusion, the book is a great read for those looking to advance their knowledge in the business world and think about topics that are not usually discussed. The author’s conclusions are creative and complex, but are backed up with hard evidence throughout the piece. The insights and advice brought up by Christensen are useful knowledge to any person studying business and the impact of emerging technologies. This is a book that I will definitely keep in mind in the future and I will recommend to others.

Christensen has recognized a major problem in business, that of tapping into disruptive innovation in a successful way, and tells us how to avoid the pitfalls and to leverage it to the advantage of the company. He has plenty of insight and is a big-picture thinker. The book is enlightening and is required reading for any business person that is in a field where innovation is important. By the way, this is a business book, not an inventor's book - as it is not about innovation itself, but is about applying that innovation to your business.Once you get through the first couple of chapters you will realize how important this book can be and you will want to read the rest of it.

I've been involved in innovation most of my career, and now wish I'd read this book much earlier. The simple but powerful thesis of the book is backed up by data and case studies from disparate industries. Like many business books it is a bit repetitive at the end. And my Kindle edition suffered from poor editing in the first few sections although those problems disappeared later on. But the ideas and usefulness are five stars.

I learned why the company I work for is failing from this book. It is a great read and very informative. I was educated about the steps it takes to lead a business to success and what people do to sink a company. It was a bit depressing. I realize the lack of sufficient leadership in the company I work for. I am shocked at how many idiot decision makers are running companies. The book made clear why large companies behave the way they do in order to stay on top. The book showed how difficult it is to create a formula of success with innovation. This is a book I will read again. I finished the book with greater knowledge of the business world.
