It took me quite awhile to find them so I thought I'd share with others so you can compare to other books/CDs that might be available. I haven't played flute since I was much younger and thought I'd try to pick it up again. I love this book because it's easy enough for a beginner to read and feel like they are moving forward rather than just playing basic scales in the instruction books. I LOVE that it comes with a CD that contains a demo of how the song should sound and another play along option. It makes playing so much easier, especially if you are not familiar with a song. Some I knew but some I haven't heard before. I will definitely buy more books from this series when I'm ready to move on.

The book has a nice selection of songs. Each song has a play along version and another version with a sax playing so you can hear what it sounds like. I was quite excited about the book and the quality of back ground music, but as I played through the songs I became less enthused. For me, the problem is that songs just seem to end too abruptly. There is no final high point, the music just ends. It is hard to put emotion into the song without a good closing point.

These arrangements are horrible. One of them is just 6 notes (same range) with different rhythms. They couldn't bother to make them at least interesting. The accompaniment cd is a joke due to the worse than midi sounds and the accompaniment book isn't much better. Yes, the publishing industry has to crank out stuff that sells, but this is just lazy writing.

This book is full of such fun songs that aren't to difficult to play. I would say for a 2nd-3rd year player (flute) it should be a piece of cake. However some of the songs require the other instrumental parts because the flute, and probably the piano and clarinet parts, do not always have the melody. Great overall though! Came quickly too!

Our minister loves this. He is a trumpet player. I am a choral director (worship team leader). We are working with young brass players. We love the CD's. The music is fun for the students to play and so they are motivated to stick with the endeavor. The music is written on a 2nd/3rd grade level, but it sounds great when our minister plays solo.

We bought this for our church band. I love it. I bought one in each key, and piano. They are interchangeable.

Love this book!!! Great that it has a play along CD. Would prefer online track playalong though.

Then on, to Mount Everest, his wife, and finally his burgeoning TV career.What Grylls lacks in eloquence he makes up for in spades with genuinely interesting, funny, charming, heartbreaking, and unrelenting stories. He once appeared in a “Most Interesting Man in the World” Dos Equis commercial as a special adviser, but honestly he is probably the closest you can get to the Most Interesting Man in the World in real life.Astonishingly, though, the one aspect of his life that shines through more than any other is just how humble and determined he is. He has had his share of lucky breaks, but also extreme adversity. While he certainly has enjoyed privileges, he’s also put in the work - and been justly rewarded. The book is well worth a read if for no other reason than to be inspired by the vision of hard work and relentless optimism.

I don't usually write a review, but felt compelled being such a big fan of Bear's (you find out in the book that his real name is Edward!). Anyway, this is a very motivational life story about grit, determination, and a man who lives life on the edge. The part explaining how he climbed Mount Everest after coming back from breaking his back in the SAS (British's Special Forces) is especially fascinating. Don't buy into all of the haters out there who claim that Bear is a fake - while many of his "survival" techniques on his MvW show are for entertainment value & shock factor alone, Bear is the real deal and his story proves firsthand just how tough he is, mentally and physically. Keep inspiring people and challenging them to become stronger versions of themselves!

I'm a big fan of watching 'Man v Wild', or other shows with Bear Grylls on TV. The shows themselves are very entertaining, but I didn't know much about the guy who stars in them. When this book came up as an Amazon Daily Deal I thought it was a good opportunity to find out.When I added this to my Goodreads list I was shocked to see that it had rating of over 4 after over 3,000 reviewers. That seems to be exceptional for an autobiography.For me, this book did live up to the high Goodreads rating. It's surprisingly well written and reminded my a lot of Anthony Bourdain in terms of style and sense of humor. Bear Grylls is a very modest guy. He says he is just an average guy with a lot of drive but I would bet not one guy in 10,000 could achieve anything like what he has. While still a student, he qualified for the British Special forces, the SAS. The SAS recruitment STARTS with something like hell week. Their logic is that if you survive that, the special soldering and training is the easy part. Thus Bear qualified for the SAS as a civilian, not coming from the military first. He gives a good account of what some of this qualifying entails, and it's tough, really tough.His military career ended when he broke his back in a parachute accident and spent most of a year in hospital and rehab. So what does he do after that, he climbs Everest! He recounting of this climb was fascinating.I can see how Bear Grylls makes a great motivational speaker. He's a man with incredible drive, passion and determination which you only get a slight glimpse of watching him on TV.4.5 stars overall.

Bear Grylls is my hero and I am a huge fan of his tv show man vs. wild. The beginning of the book started off slow and I was not that interested. However, as the book progressed the excitement and suspense built. The more I read, the more I wanted to continue to read. The life lessons I learned from this book and this man's life I have taken to heart. On the surface it is a story of love and adventure. But it is also a story of pain, suffering, fear, and depression. By surviving his nearly fatal skydiving accident, by surviving SAS selection, by surviving school and college, by surviving mount everest, by surviving the death of his dearly beloved father, and all the other pain that he has gone through. He survived it all and found happiness, peace, joy, and liberation somehow, someway. He found his inner strength with the help of his lovely wife and by having faith in god. The book is more than a life story but the story of the need to be loved, the story of finding your inner strength. and the story of survival.

I have been a Bear Grylls fan for quite a while, so I really enjoyed getting to know a little about Bear's past and how he became the man he is today. The book starts from the beginning starting off with Bear's young life as an inquisitive and playful boy; it discusses his relationships with his family and recalls memories - both good and bad - about his early development. It then continues to discuss his military training, all the hardships and failures. The book does a good job into diving you into his adventures in Everest. Overall, the book does a good job at keeping you entertained and expressing all the life lessons Bear has learned throughout the years.

The first in a series of comics based on underrepresented stories of the time period, the work uses primary and secondary sources, and is told in a way that makes the information accessible to students. All of the entries contain a brief introduction that assumes a basic amount of historical knowledge before presenting the story. Each vignette is short enough to keep the interest of most readers. All of the narratives are excellent, concise, and easy to follow. The illustrations, however, are a mixed bag. Some are sepia-toned, some black-and-white with splashes of other primary colors, some muddy, and others are colored brightly. None of the color schemes seem to be related to the narrative being told. The artwork ranges from realistic to almost clownish, and, as such, detracts from the general cohesion of the work—a weakness in the collection. Especially effective in this volume are the entries by Charles Fetherolf, E.J. Barnes, and Matt Rawson. A fantastic collection of stories, diverse and well-told, and filled with some great artwork. It's fascinating stuff for anyone interested in history, regardless of whether it's your own or not. I'm definitely looking forward to follow-up!

Great gift for youngsters that love comics and history!

A beautiful anthology of colonial historical vignettes in the same vein as Matt Dembicki's collections. In fact, Dembicki has illustrated a story in this collection. I'm actually only familiar with a couple of the authors or illustrators but I found the stories and art top-notch. This chronological history of New England tells the lesser known tales and I had not heard many of them, even though they are populated with famous people. Because the stories are chronological, geographically specific and focused on a set time period, often characters will reappear in several stories, sometimes as a major player, other times as a background figure. The book is best suited for middle graders to high school and the book's website is making educator guides for the stories. However, the material is perfectly satisfying to the adult reader and the art is varied and showcases a variety of styles. I found it quite impressive and highly readable.

Colonial Comics: New England starts with one of the best prefaces I've ever encountered: Editor Rodriguez wryly noting that prior to this book, his knowledge of New England history and the founding of America was pretty much limited to, "a country that was once inhabited by other nationals, reduced to several cities, a single Native American, a group of people who weren't happy in England, and some charred bodies." It was to correct that lack and bring to life individual histories - to give perspective to the founding portion of American history- that this book's stories were collected. Quoting Rodriguez again, "these people did more than eat turkey and burn suspected witches."And yes, it is a very, very good book indeed.The title is a bit misleading - this is a full color graphic novel (or, rather, a graphic history book) and not a comic. Ordered chronologically, this is a collection of very short stories that are loosely tied together by the shared history of a New England setting. All are about people and events, ramifications and repercussions, and the every day life of both Europeans and the natives.Each story is by a different author/artist. Typically, I have a hard time with diverse collections since the abruptness of art styles or storytelling can be disconcerting and throw off a read. But the nature of the stories and the non-fiction grounding make the style differences not only palatable but enjoyable. The stories are just long enough that one didn't get hooked on a particular style (art or storytelling) but not so short that they were disaffecting, either. Rodriguez manages a good balance throughout - from wordless tales to text-heavy historical factoids. From almost comic lighthearted illustrations to woodblock type carvings and beautiful pastel watercolors.The stories are diverse: from the impact of the introduction of domesticated animals to the plight of indentured servants. Goodwives, clergy, governors, inkeepers, chiefs, braves - a lot of care was given to bring stories that represented all sides of New England life in the 1620 to 1750 time period. There are around 15 full color stories, ranging from landing in Plimouth (sc) to the last stands of the new England natives. There are also frontisplates with short descriptions of time periods in which the following stories would be set and reproductions of parts of important documents of the period. Finally, there are activities such as an origami mayflower to be made from cutouts of a book page.The stories are interesting enough to read for enjoyment value; but of course, the historical value cannot be understated. Since these are stories that rarely have been told outside of academic circles, there isn't any repetition of typical historical discussions about the founding of the colonies. Each story should be quite new to the reader. As well, the length of the stories make this a great book to use as a reading assignment - to discuss the thoughts presented within. The authors/artists don't pander or spoonfeed the history: a great example is the last story in the book, about a young midshipman named Meliville and the day his crew fought and captured a large pale whale. The name of the midshipman is only given once, in passing - a wonderful observation of restraint and avoidance of overtelling the obvious.I really enjoyed the stories and plan to share them with my 11 year old. As the editor notes, "they're stories about people, which are oftentimes more interesting than stories about caricatures."Reviewed from an ARC. Quotes may not be final.

This is a beautiful book! I have never been very interested in American History but this this book is written about several different events that took place during colonial times and they were all very interesting. The stories are all short and beautifully illustrated by many different talented artists. I would have loved to been able to read something like this in 4th grade when the whole year was dedicated to learning about Virginian History...a lot of focus being Virginia during the Colonial times. My daughter is 3 but already loves comics and I'm sure she'll love this book when she's older.

Loved it. This book made the history feel real by taking the time to show us all sorts of people that would be supporting characters in a streamlined narrative of the history. The stories in the book are chronological but short so it's a quick read even though it's a LOT of stories. Some of the art I enjoyed more than others but everything seemed to fit the style of the story.
