This reverse beauty and the beast tale tackles some new territory. The heroine, Wren, is a recluse raised by a loving aunt and uncle who recently died. She has a port wine birthmark on one side other face, but it is the impact of her emotionally abusive early childhood that really holds her prisoner. She asked the hero, Alex, to marry her for her money. He is an exceptional person with a kind heart and a strong sense of duty. Alex does not optimistically assume he can step in to "fix" Wren. Instead, he ponders the extent of the emotional damage she suffers and whether he can have any kind of bearable relationship with her. Rather than blithely force her out from under her metaphorical rock, he supports her decisions about what she can handle. And, she is an excellent business woman, a role he also supports. Alex is an unusual person for his (or any) age.Watching this couple is absorbing, if not always pleasant Their journey is, however, rewarding to read.I must say that I've been to so many Balogh weddings by now that I began fidgeting in the pew and checking my watch during this one, although I was happy for them.Random thoughts:Wren, we are told, has stayed at home, with brief business forays to her glass factory, since she was 10 and going to Alex's home to meet neighbors for tea is her first venture outside her home to socialize. Yet we are also told that Wren visits her local church on Sundays. ??? Perhaps English rural churches are very different from rural Appalachian churches, where Wren would have had every congregant speak to her, inquire about her relatives living and dead, and she would not be allowed to leave until she signed up to bring a covered dish to Wednesday's church supper. Also, how did 19th century ladies avoid obesity when any time they sat down, they were plied with cookies and cakes? Those Empire-waisted dresses would cover a great deal, but even they could only do so much.

I can honestly say that Ms Balogh is one of the most consistent authors in this genre. I forgot about this preorder and was not particularly expecting anything so it came as a very pleasant surprise. The story starts of quite differently and I wasn't enamoured of either main character but my goodness did I get sucked in. The h was born with a strawberry birthmark covering the left side of her face. When she meets the H, she is almost 30 years old and a recluse. If she goes out, she wears a veil covering her face. She invited the H to tea because she had discovered he was in need to turn about the estate, which he had inherited unexpectedly. She has money and he needs it. She wants marriage, affection and children. When she proposes marriage to the H, he is not thrilled. He suggests they get to know each other first. He challenges her at every turn and pushes her to reveal her face, first to him and then to various other people he slowly introduces to her. There is definitely not a smooth path to the hea but the author builds the journey so well. The h has many layers and many secrets. The H showed surprising depth, although he was a lovely secondary character in the previous 2 books. I enjoyed seeing bits of the other characters from the first two books too. This book can stand alone though. I want to go back and reread this again soon, it's that good.

This is an okay novel, but it's not up to the engrossing stories that Mary Balogh has written in the past. I was expecting so much more. The story itself took was slow and pondering with almost half of the book devoted to persuading the heroine to agree to what she suggested in the first place - namely to wed the Earl to whom she essentially proposed. The Earl fairly quickly agreed to her suggestion that he marry her to acquire sufficient wealth to restore the run down estate he had inherited. He was patience itself. Nevertheless, getting to the wedding took forever, and we never got to see whether or how the Earl's estate, Brambledean Court, was restored.I suppose that I was expecting a different type of story based on the book's description and title. Next time, instead of my usual automatic purchase, I'll wait awhile for more reviews to get a better sense of the actual story.

This is the first time I have wished I could give more than 5 stars! This book and it's characters was just amazing and engrossed me so much I didn't even realize I was crying as I read.Wren Heydon has a port wine birthmark on the left side of her face and has spent 20 years living as a complete recluse who wore a veil whenever she did interact with people. But, her loving Aunt and Uncle have died and while they left her a company to run and great wealth she is lonely and longs for marriage and children. Wren is methodical selects some prospects needing money and sets out to buy a husband. The book opens with third prospect Alexander, Earl of Riverdale. While it is obvious there are other books of the Wescott family, which I have not read, I had no trouble keeping up with the story and who's who. What follows from that first meeting is just amazing. I am a prolific romance reader and found Wren unique, with her brains, money and most of all courage to face her demons and venture outside of her lonely cocoon.Alexander is her perfect mate, gorgeous with honor and best of all empathy to those in his life. Watching the two of them coming together as Wren ventures into the world without the protection of her veil brought me at several points to tears and the ending left me with a smile wishing the book would continue. Definitely a desert island keeper. Now to definitely read the previous books in the Westcott world.

I love the premise of this book - wounded heroine, kind hero - and the characters. It is a good, solid romance so I gave this 3 stars. But, this did not end up being very special. The author wrote way too many fat paragraphs describing what people were thinking and feeling; I prefer when much of that information is instead revealed via conversations and interactions. As a result, the book felt weighty in many places, it lacked humor, and the climax was bland. I was intrigued and touched in the early parts of the book...but became less so as the book progressed.

I think this book is more for a prospectors reference rather than a field trip manual. Being very familiar with the sites and mineral localities of Washington I read the entries for that state in the book, to get a guage on how useful this book may be. Honestly, some are played out or inaccessible due to civilization encroachment but that doesn't mean the knowledge of the mineral occurance should be lost and there are some that are still valid after all the years. So I would say its a mixed bag. I would recommend the book for those of us who are the hard core prospectors and trackers of mineral deposits rather than the weekender looking to take their kids on a rockhounding adventure. The truth is that you can be mere feet away from most any mineral and if you don't know what you are looking for you can go right past or over it so make this a companion book not the only one you take to the field.

this book is good for general areas. but the authors specific areas are way off ( for counties and cities ). went to gisham mountain for minerals and the park keeper who is a retired oregon state universay geologist advised that there was no such minerals in the mountain for he read the same book and looked and found none. went to china creek around florance, oregon and the following 5 creeks north of florance. dug and hounded---found nothing. it is a good book for GENERAL areas but watch out for specifics for it is not even close

I've had the SW Quadrant books for several years and I've recently moved into this quadrant. These books are loaded with information and I take them with me every time I leave town. And this volume is everything I knew it would be. Awesome!

Good Product

This series is one of the most poorly conceived mineral guides I have ever seen. The author obviously knows very little about minerals e.g. "quartz rock crystal" and his maps are so poor you would be lucky to find anything using them. I agree with a previous reviewer who said "do not waste your time with these books." L. Dee, Geologist

This book covers only very well known locations and only of rocks and minerals suitable for lapidary. This book is a good 30 years out of date. In my own state, I have been to every location listed and 90% of them do not exist anymore or are no longer accessible. In addition, I know of several other areas that are well known but not listed. Don't waste your time with this book.

#20,982 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Interesting to see the mention of this book as a "favorite" of Bill Gates, given to him by Warren Buffet with a strong recommendation. Article in the Wall St. Journal mentioned it was out of print. Within days, miraculously back in print, complete with kindle edition (which I purchased) and climbing the best seller lists. The book's "business adventures" take place in the mid 60's and it was fun to journey back to those days when I could not have cared less about business and finance - provides an interesting perspective after 40 years in business and finance - especially with regard to well paid executives and engineers making an astounding $13k a year! Frankly, they don't write them like this anymore. Probably one of the best written tomes of a non-fiction nature in terms of vocabulary, erudition, grammatical precision and article structure that I have read. Some will find the long detailed stories on the role of the SEC, happenings in the currency exchange markets to be overdone, but for those with and interest it is a treasure trove to explore these things when the U.S. would still pay off foreign currency claims in gold at $35 an ounce.

I had heard, as I think everyone else has, that Business Adventures was a favorite book of Bill Gates and Warren Buffet. I read the ebook, and I understand a print version will be forthcoming in September. This book makes me feel as though I'm sitting at the knee of my grandfather, listening to wise recollections.A writer of articles in the 1950's and 1960, many for the New Yorker, the author intelligently and thoughtfully steps through 12 events, one per chapter. At first I thought perhaps I was particularly dense and wasn't getting the message. What held these stories together? Eventually, I realized that the author is not driving home a point, selling anything, or giving advice. His observations leave room for the reader to consider events, their connections, their parallels to today, the importance of character, and the question of morality in business. It was refreshing not to be told what to think.I enjoyed the stories of Ford's Edsel, Piggly Wiggly, Xerox, Goodrich vs Latex. The chapter on the federal income tax is particularly relevant, given the wide-spread debate about taxes and modern conversations about the 1%.John Brooks' perspective is firmly rooted in the past, when the book was written, and provides readers opportunity for a sense of omniscience since we can consider ramifications the author himself could not be aware of, at that time.Times may change. People do not.

The book details twelve stories from the business world, mostly occurring in the 1950s and 1960s. These stories cover such subjects as the infamous failure of the Ford Edsel, the experience of a few large companies' stockholders meetings, the rise of Xerox, a particularly fluctuating market in May 1962, among others. For the most part, I found this book to be quite an interesting look at various business and financial stories. The author is quite thorough in his descriptions and also looks at several of the people involved. In some cases, he seems to have actually interviewed several of the individuals involved in these stories. The only real criticism I have is that the twelfth story, covering attempts by bankers to save the British pound in the 1960s, was extremely long-winded and somewhat difficult to follow.Overall, I thought this book was a good look at some interesting stories from the business world. I would recommend this book to those interested in business.

I originally purchased this book because of Bill Gates' affinity towards it, and I must say, "Business Adventures" did not disappoint. Each story is a rich tale given in eloquent prose by John Brooks about the machinations of industry and the men who controlled it in the 1950's and 1960's. It's amazing to see the parallels of today's market through the pages of this book. Everything is so cyclical. I guess there really is nothing new under the sun.

I must confess: I bought this hoping for insights on better investments. That it was not. It WAS a well researched, exceptionally well written collection of historical events in the world of business and finance. The final chapter, on foreign exchange, was as gripping as any mystery novel. I really enjoyed it.

I’m really not sure why this book is still heralded. It’s extremely dated and frankly, not that insightful. If you’re younger than 70 and have been in business or are a student of business, you can skip this.

Not your typical business book as you must dig for the lesson from each story. That can also be a good thing as it challenges and develops your thinking process. The author is a very talented writer and while the stories are a bit dated, most pull you into a specific sphere of the business world very quickly. It is up to you to learn from that point on what the best lesson is from each as you get an interesting insider look into a myriad of business and government vignettes.

A great collections of some amazing business events from the 1960's. Truly timeless in their appropriateness in a business context. I highly recommended this book to anyone interested in business and ethics to a large degree.

I bought this book knowing it as one of the classic, must-have business books. Actually, I bought it because Bill Gates thought highly of it. Well, you actually do learn a lot from the book, and the stories are very interesting. This book can prove to be a very inspirational piece, and motivational too. I would recommend this book for young adults, as they start to venture in the business world, you never know what you can learn from reading a nice book.
