A Million Wings: A Spirited Story of the Sporting Life Along the Mississippi Flyway, by Susan Schadt

Review

“The stunning photographs and the heartfelt stories in A Million Wings inspire people. While everybody will not play golf at Augusta National or play in the U.S. Open, they watch. They watch and it inspires them to play the game and to play the game better. In golf, the big clubs and the professional game is a small part of the whole story, but it is what motivates people to grow the game. Like Augusta National, the private retreats featured on these pages may seem like the ultimate hunting experience. But these are the places that do the work to keep duck hunting alive and inspire people to gain a better understanding of the sport. They motivate the rest of us, they are the ones who are growing the sport and I, for one, say, ‘Thanks a million.’” – Davis Love III, winner of 20 PGA events, six time Ryder Cup competitor and captain of Team USA at Ryder Cup 2012. ""The duck clubs of the Mississippi Flyway are legendary for both their hunting and their history. In the new book A Million Wings (Wild Abundance), Susan Schadt and photographer Lisa Buser tell their stories through interviews with members, club lore, and gorgeous images. Join in the morning high jinks at Greasy Slough, near Jonesboro, Arkansas, see the sun rise at Fighting Bayou, outside Ruleville, Mississippi, and learn how Anderson's Hole, at St. Charles, Missouri's Dardenne, got its name. Hint: It's not a good idea to complain too much at duck camp."" -Garden & Gun magazine

In 2011 on my son's 30th birthday, I gave him a new shotgun, plus the first two books in the series published by Arts Memphis. He started hunting ducks in Georgia with me at age 10, since passing on the multiple generation tradition of hunting, fishing and the love of the outdooors was one of my most important task as a father. These three books record the importance of friendships at the hunting camp or lodge, great food, the shared efforts of preparing for the hunt etc- all recorded in great photography. It is similar to a quote that I have framed in my home, published in the first edition of Wildfowl magazine in August/September 1985:"...hunting is a sport where the goal is not the game taken, but the activity by which the game is taken....The sunrises seen, the obstacles overcome, the dangers avoided ...all are part of it- in fact they are the whole of it". These three books, similar to my many photographic sporting journals, record multiple years of this tradition and how the members of these old hunting clubs have passed on that tradition to the next two generations- sons and daughters and grandsons and granddaughters.

My husband received this book as a gift over a month ago, and he still sits down and flips through it several times a week. Nice coffee table book for someone who's into the sport.

If you hunt in Texas, the information gleaned from this book is remarkable. Your hunting buddies will be amazed at the facts you know or tired of hearing you talk about the history of hunting in this great state.

A wonderful coffee table book for the duck lover and or hunter. The scenery is beautiful and the stories are great. I would definitely recommend it!

He loves it. It is his idea of the perfect coffee table book :) If you love ducks and the such it is a great book with great photos.

Great photo's and a very interesting history of some of the most famous clubs along the Mississippi flyway. Would love to see something similar documenting some of the same history along the other flyways.

Awesome story of America's delta waterfowl meccas.

This beautiful book was given as a gift and was a huge Christmas hit! I highly recommend the book and will give it to other people.

Worth the read.

A pleasure research!

Dr. Marston is brilliant. While some reviews disparage the level of speech; I found he has a wonderful ability to express the complex in a very readable and relatable way. His constructs are powerfully illuminating. If you use DISC products - as user or consultant - this book is must-have if you want to mine the full value those products offer.

is rarity

Very few books of this type stand the test of time...this book, on its own and through the DiSC continues to live and grow.

Marston did a good job with his contribution to the lie detector but his psychological theory, described in this book, is more than a bit bananas -- perhaps because he lived with both a wife and mistress, invented Wonder Woman and seems like a man that may have grown up with too many sisters.

This book should be pirated, some words are not clear, it is recommended not to buy

If you want theory then know this is what you are getting. For me it was over my head. YAWN

An excellent synopsis of the New Zealand Expeditionary force during WWII. It gives concise descriptions of campaigns fought by these forces and excellent photos of some of these soldiers serving during that time. There are pictures included that provide excellent details of uniforms/battle dress worn during the campaigns. An excellent reference for any military history buff or for anyone who is seeking information on a family member's division. I will purchase from this vendor again.

Great book

This book provides a short overview of the role of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force (NZEF) of World War II, aimed mainly (as far as I can tell) at modelers and reenactors. Readers seeking a more general account of the NZEF will be somewhat disappointed. The topics covered in the book include the organisation of the NZEF, short biographies of the two permanent divisional commanders, short summaries of the two divisions' campaigns and a highly detailed description of the uniforms worn by the troops. While the campaign summaries are useful, I felt that they were slanted to portray the NZEF in a positive light (even allowing for the generally high quality of this force). The terrible losses suffered by the 2nd NZ Division in 1941 and 1942 are skirted over with undue haste (the division came close to being destroyed on two separate occasions, but the trauma this caused and the process of rebuilding are not covered in any depth), and the book includes some nonsense about "national values of 'mateship' and teamwork" underpinning the success of the Kiwi units; good training, doctrine and leadership are more likely to have been the key factors here. I wasn't terribly interested in the detailed material on how the soldiers dressed, but the book's coverage of the NZEF's surprisingly complex organisation is excellent -- the authors do a good job of explaining the changes to the structure of the divisions, and why these took place. I was somewhat disappointed that the book didn't so much as mention the large home defence force stationed in New Zealand during 1942 and 1943 though; while these three divisions did not form part of the NZEF, they were a significant part of the New Zealand Army's wartime experience, and their formation contributed to a shortage of replacements for the 2nd Division in North Africa.Overall, while this book will be useful to readers who are looking for an introduction to the history of the NZEF or detail on how the soldiers dressed, it doesn't have much to offer other audiences.

thank you
