This book was written by a woman who spent the last seven years of Gibran's life with him. The author, Barbara Young, writes: "This book is not a rehearsal of genealogy, not a family tree. It is a simple story of the great man as I found him during the seven years that immediately preceded his death. The years when his gifts and his consciousness were at their height . . . "Gibran himself states, "Telling you what I have done is not telling you what I am."We happen to learn of Gibran's childhood, of a playful, loving mother that sang continuously. Gibran says of his mother, "she lived countless poems yet never wrote one." Young tells us, "This period of his early life was much in his mind when that life drew toward its close."The author continues, "What he [Gibran] had to say, his contribution to the world of painting and literature, both Arabic and English, is immeasurable."
I guess I was expecting a more in-depth delving into the personal life of Gilbran; what forged this special man? But the book is more like a 188 page ode to his works. Not sorry I read it, but not a read that will grab and fascinate you.

I was raised around Gibran's books, and they have, I think, left a deep imprint on my consciousness. I have been rereading and exploring his works over the last few months, so I felt that reading a biography would be beneficial. This biography was written by a friend/student of Gibran's, who compiled "Sand and Foam" and was close to the poet for the last seven years of his life. There are interesting insights because of that, but the text becomes a hagiography of sorts at times, and one wishes upon reading it that it was not just an endless tract of praise of the man--the book itself honestly seems a bit anachronistic as far as "biographies" go, though Young does warn that she is not trying to write a chronological biography (and she doesn't). Still, Gibran's work is beautiful and many of the details provided are insightful--and the best moments in the book do come from reading the poet's words themselves.
Barbara Young was Kahlil Gibran's final personal assistant, and spent much time with him in the last years of his short life. Very few people know of THIS MAN FROM LEBANON, which she described as a "study" of Kahlil Gibran.The sympathetic reader cannot come here expecting a biography. What Young has attempted to do is paint an Adoration portrait in words of Gibran, much in the literary style of Gibran himself. The writing is beautiful, it is prose-poetry, and it gives us Gibran through Young's eyes as a kind of supra-human spirit clothed in flesh.Much of Young's word-portraiture is neither accurate nor factual. That it may be "true" in that sense reserved for higher things is more difficult to say. She tells improbable stories of his childhood: That at the age of three he burst into joyous tears when perusing a book of DaVinci artwork; she accepts as true the tales Gibran told of growing up in an opulent home surrounded by gardens through which ambled tame lions; and she credits him with a maturity and a vision in his early years that only a saint would have. In short, she confabulates Gibran with his literary alter-ego Almustafa, the chosen and the beloved, and casts Gibran's life as the stuff of The Prophet.This is simply invented. Gibran grew up in a small Lebanese town. His father put the family into penury through intemperate living and poor business sense. That Gibran, who came to the U.S. at age 13 in 1896 and settled with his mother and sisters (but not the father) in the poor Syrian enclave within Boston, might want to invent tales worthy of Khayyam to blunt the pain of a sorrowful childhood is certainly forgivable.Young's perpetuation of these tales (whether she knew them to be untrue or not), and her casting of Gibran's existence in a deep light is also forgivable within the compass of this book. It is a beautiful read.If you are seeking the facts of Gibran's life, look elsewhere; if you are seeking to know his very human failings also look elsewhere; but if you wish to touch Gibran's inner universe, this book is invaluable.
Poor Barbara Young!The number of her readers seems to be inversely proportional to the love and devotion she had for this great "man from Lebanon"!And yet, the name Kahlil Gibran (his real name is Gibran Khalil Gibran) should be well known in the States, at least as the author of that magnificent book, The Prophet.The life and character of Gibran, as seen by Barbara Young , stem from a belief that he was a man endowed with superhuman power, physical as well as spiritual: as such, they contain many exaggerations, because they turn Gibran into a kind of saint. In fact he was a great poet, both in English and in Arabic, and a very gifted painter.He was instrumental in the renascence of Lebanese literature in the first quarter of the 20th Century(the so-called Nahda), when he was in charge of the "Rabita Al-Qalamiyah", a society of Lebanese writers living in New York. To sum up, the interested reader would learn a lot from this book about Gibran's life both in Lebanon and in the States, even without taking every word in it for granted.
