Readers will find that Matilda, presented in HEART OF THE CONQUEROR, as a strong women, and many readers will like this representation as a breath of fresh air compared to the same old weak woman-strong man twaddle women have had to put up with for centuries. It gets old, and no matter how often it's spewed, many of both sexes won't buy into this lie any more.A strong man like the historical William of Normandy would not have remained married and faithful (from all accounts) to Matilda for so long. It seems that he was always dedicated and committed to her even in 1066 - we're talking about the rough and ready Viking Period here. Matilda is characterized by Lawrence as I believe she would have actually been - complete with all of the flaws and virtues we exhibit in 2017. Both William and Matilda are appealingly and colorfully drawn; Lawrence's descriptions are vivid.I would like to read volume 2 in her series, but Amazon does not seem to have it - a shame, because one wants to read more of these characters, though I know how the final historical picture is finally painted. If you love reading history with a personal touch (aside from the drier historical prose), I can think of no better book for your delectation than THE HEART OF THE CONQUEROR.
I very much enjoyed this novel, and I don't usually read this genre. Hard to imagine how a contemporary writer could come up with so much good info about what it was like to live in eleventh century Europe, but it was believable. In fact, the settings and descriptions are a rich aspect of this story. I was hooked in the very beginning because I enjoy reading about strong women. In spite of the way women at this time in history were bartered like cattle and viewed about as highly, there's a neat theme of feminism powering this story. The two main characters are nuanced, and the dramatic tension is enough to keep you reading well past bedtime. I will say that some of the scenes and dialogue go on too long, and the conversations can be repetitious. However, if you're not in a hurry, it's kind of a feast. I'm thinking for example of the monk Brother Edgar who was, in his earlier life, a passionate soldier named Wulf. Author Lawrence is a gifted writer, and I'm looking forward to the second book in this series.
I thought the book was very informative but also is a love story with all the gory details. The informative part: I did not know much about William's life, yes I knew of the battle of Hastings but that was it. Ms. Lawrence tells the story well, how William was declared heir to the throne of England by Edward and her description of the battle of Hastings was just excellent, yes I knew the outcome but not the interesting details. Also, I wondered and I might be wrong here, wether William's title: the conqueror is accurate. I mean he went to England to claim the throne as the legitimate heir, not to conquer the country.Unlike other of her novels, I thought Ms. Lawrence, overplayed the romantic side of the story, I mean how many times am I going to read about William and Matilda romping in bed?A good and interesting read nevertheless.
Very interesting subject, but the author reduces Mathilda to a two-dimensional character; the two dimensions being narcissistic and sexually turned on by power and violence. Several times, I just had to put the book down after reading 3-4 chapters because I was so tired of being inside Mathilda's ego. And it doesn't help that the cover photo epitomizes a 21st century Holywood view of beauty; I'm not sure the standards for beauty were the same in the 11th century Europe.
This book is just....awful. It reads as if the author read some "how-to" engage readers in a romance. The Matilda of this book comes off as a cold character reading a script; she is not warm, compelling, or engaging. She reads rather much like a teenager who envisions herself as a strong woman, but has only the verbiage of Danielle Steele novels.
Poor editing, too many grammatical/typo errors. No character development. I finally stopped reading after the hundredth time Matilda boasts of her own beauty.
I like the fact that the picture we are given of Matilda shows how she grew in mind and strength to use the talent she had. However it seemed to me that there were way too many detailed sex scenes which took pages to describe. I finally just started to skip those too repeated parts. Way too many for my taste.S
Two nights directly work and dinner finishes, straight through to the end of part one. This jaded old wreck of a Texan has read nearly every story, nearly every chronicle, nearly every saga written about the birth of that uniquely defined clump of cells that would become the genus of women who can identify with or be motioned as mirrors of Matilda. Searching for 65 years to find my own particular ancestry, the line which could and would be an explanation for bewildered parents has finally culminated in a match! It was as if while reading these words, that next sentence, that following thought, was being lifted from the hidden nucleus of me. It is not surprising to note that the footpath of immigration follows nearly identical that hopscotch of bloodlines Matilda recites. I am not alone. I have a thousand years of Matilda' s standing behind me. If I may Ms. Lawrence-well done Gemma, well done.
