Here she has put together an indispensable four-season growing guide that will inspire you to sow your own cutting garden-whether you plant one row or hundreds." - Melissa Ozawa, garden and features editor, Martha Stewart Living"I met Erin Benzakein more than ten years ago when she was a young mom growing sweet peas and dreaming of making her living from flowers. With passion, focus and seemingly limitless endurance, Erin has achieved her dream. And now she's sharing that dream with the world - everyone from fellow flower enthusiasts to emerging farmer-florists to veteran designers yearning for a new, seasonal and sustainable model of floristry. The essentials are all here in the pages of Floret Farm's Cut Flower Garden, and like everything Erin does, it is both lovely and practical. This is a comprehensive, must-have companion as you pursue your own authentic life in flowers." --Debra Prinzing, author and founder of slowflowers.com"Among a sea of new florists and floral books, Floret Flowers stands out. Erin Benzakein's integrity, openness and passion for flowers is unmistakable. In her debut book she not only introduces us to the basics of growing our own flowers, she shares her deep love and understanding of gardening in a way that will leave even the most doubtful grower feeling inspired to get their hands in the dirt." --Grace Bonney, founder of Design Sponge and author of In the Company of Women "Erin Benzakein is my flower hero and her book is my new flower bible. Not only is she the undisputed heart and soul of the farmer-florist movement, her arrangements are some of the most exquisite I've ever seen. Her first book is deliciously gorgeous and incredibly comprehensive- combining practical advice alongside a huge overdose of seasonal inspiration. Her secrets for extending the vase life of each variety are mind bendingly useful for me and will be referenced time and time again. My copy will be soil covered and weather beaten before long and cherished all the more for it." --Amy Merrick, Amy Merrick Flowers & Styling"Do you love flowers? You're about to love them even more. I got interested in Gardening just this year. I searched Amazon for a book on Gardening, and thought this one looked right...not very expensive and not too overwhelming...just right. What I like first, is her excitement. Author loves flowers - Cut Flowers ! I thought cutting flowers was a No No :) But it is not, it is a Yes Yes. Who knew that cutting flowers actually makes more Blooms ! Second I love the easy to follow tips for planting and growing and even arranging. Erin picks out about a dozen plants and explains watering, spacing and feeding. I have Learned Way Too Much About Compost in the last few months!! (of course you never know too much about compost)This also makes a great reference book. Perhaps you want to start out slow and tackle some other things in following years, so you can look at following chapters - or you can skip around.Erin's excitement is contagious and I find myself planting Sweet Peas, which I had never before heard of. My Petunias and Zinnias are doing well and I can't wait for my Chrysanthemums. I have my pinching and cutting tools all ready...c'mon blooms ! This book was very valuable to this beginner.
Wow. Wow. Wow. Erin. She amazes me. She is a trailblazer in the Cut Flower Farm Industry right now. Her aesthetic with her website it stellar, so I was expecting her book to be also and it did not disappoint! She is simply amazing. She is so admirable how much she tries to help the small flower grower and share what she has learned from trial and error. I am often telling people about her, that they have to know about her. I'm a UCMaster Gardener so I'm talking a lot to people about plants, etc. but Erin she makes me want to be twenty years younger and turn my acerage into a flower farm. She is truly inspiring.I've given this book as a gift twice now and keep my copy on the coffee table. I think this book will go down as one of the most iconic gardening books. I'm grateful to Erin for her passion and hard work, she's authentic and generous and we need more like her.
Wow, what an accomplishment. I've been scouring Erin Benzakein's website and blog since I started farming flowers about 3 years ago, and I could not have accomplished what I have without her and her incredible team. This book compiles a lot of what she has already written about, but also includes tips on post-harvest care for flowers, varieties of woody shrubs and trees that work well for floral design and wholesale, and a seasonal calendar of tasks for the garden. It is incredibly useful, and it's obvious that Erin has poured her soul into it. If you are just starting out in flower farming and floral design, this is the book to buy. As a current flower farmer, I wish I'd had this book a long time ago! My only complaint is that while the book is perfect for beginners, and has more knowledge packed into it than others of its kind, it's not a blueprint for success in flower farming. I was hoping to find a good resources section, maybe on how and from whom to buy wholesale quantities of seed and plants, or how to plan succession plantings, or how to manage a team of people. But these things are beyond the scope of this book, which is definitely geared toward home gardeners (understood, that's a bigger audience) so I'm looking forward to Erin's next book: Floret Farm's Flower Business Bible.
Lovely book. I'm a novice gardener looking for inspiration and this book has so many pictures that just make you wish you had a larger garden. It was a bit more geared towards flower farms, but can be applied to every other home gardener who has some space to work with. I'm excited to try some of her tricks on my Zinnias and Cosmos.I messed up on some of her go-to flowers (my fault, not the boooks), but looking forward to next year for a do-over on Sweet Peas and Larkspur. Definitely a great inspiration.
I had been following Erin’s flower column in the publication Growing For Market for years. When she wrote her book I got it on kindle as it was cheaper. Well after a year I got the hardback too. I’ve referred to it many many times this growing season. Her detailed instructions are worth the price, but there are gorgeous photographs of the recommended blooms during each season. Despite her success I find Erin still down to earth. One of her strengths is commitment to helping new and existing flower farmers achieve their dreams. I highly recommend checking out her new online class for flower farmers, both large and small. Floret is only two acres! Don’t think your garden plot is too small for success. Don’t think you can’t benefit from her book either, no matter how long you have been growing. She is working on a second book, which won’t come out soon enough for me!
It's a beautiful book but so frustrating that most of the photographs don't have captions! The flowers in the photographs should all be identified in a book about how to grow flowers!
What I enjoy is that this book is so based in the real flower garden world with beautiful pictures, very well written information and endearing stories. As a text it is very useful and grounded in good growing information-as a flower guide it is inspiring. I can't say enough about the quality, wealth of information and encouragement the book holds for beginning flower growers and well experienced flower farmers.
