Extras is the unexpected final book in the Uglies series, following what was originally touted as a trilogy. The series is set in a dystopian future in which the ideas of beauty and conformity are the central ideals of the society. This book takes place a few years after Tally's story ended and centers on Aya Fuse. While conformity is less of a "thing" than it once was, beauty still remains as a measure of worth. But is apparently no longer enough to be beautiful OR to be unique. In Aya's city, being famous was the primary goal. The more famous you are, the higher your "face rank" is and that rank is the currency upon which her society is based.There are pretty specific cliques within her fame-obsessed world. There are the tech heads, those that are obsessed with the newest technology. There are also the surge monkeys, those who are obsessed with the newest and weirdest plastic surgery trends in their quest for physical attractiveness. And then there are the kickers, those obsessed with tracking down the latest story, the latest gossip, the latest bit of news. These are posted on feeds, techy versions of our blogs. Those whose face ranks are at the low end are the extras, the climbers who are obsessed with raising their ranks. Aya is an extra with a face rank so low that no one knows who she is. And she is obsessed with changing that. When she stumbles upon a mysterious group of girls, it changes everything for her. Most of the book focuses on Aya and her friends and they are all important to the story. But we also see Tally and her crew again, brought into the story at important moments. There are a ton of twists and turns in the plot, and quite a few surprises.In many ways, this is a timely book for this day and age. It confronts the ideas of beauty and fame both, and turns it on edge in an extreme way that makes you think. There are also themes of ethics and morality that present themselves in interesting, even if subtle, ways.There is no question that I loved this series and the thoughts it provoked. But I can't help but wish that perhaps it took all of these themes just a bit further. Like any good dystopian story, the author criticizes current society and focuses on aspects of it that are disturbing in their potential for disaster. He took those things to extreme levels and based the world of his books on those aspects. Beauty, conformity, fame... all of these things have the potential for disaster. And all of these things are questioned. But in the end, Tally still becomes Pretty and Aya still becomes famous. True, as characters they have questioned those things and they are aware of the darker side, but they still became the very things that are at the center of controversy. While both of these girls rebelled against the system, they both benefitted from it and I am not sure that was the intended message. Of course, I do tend to over think things!My Recommendation: This is an well-written series with some important issues as the focus. It is engaging and thought-provoking and a fantastic reading experience.

Scott Westerfeld’s “Uglies” is about a soon to be sixteen year old girl who lives in a society that forces you to turn “pretty” when you turn sixteen. If you are not willing to go through with this, you will be taken by Special Circumstances and forced to go through with the surgery. The surgery includes removing every layer of skin that the young adult has on their body, breaking many bones, adding plastic to your bones, and it has one other major effect on the body of the teen but you’ll have to read the book to find out about the last plot-changing effect. Special Circumstances is like the government of this dystopian society. They regulate everything; they know where people are because everyone is required to wear an interface ring. The hover boards that the characters own have tracking devices in them and they will tattle on the person riding it if they go out of the boundaries of their city. Most “uglies” trick the hover boards though so that they can’t let Special Circumstances know when they’re doing something wrong. The reason that this society is so manipulating is to eliminate all personal thought. They have brainwashed every person into thinking that the surgery is a good thing and that everyone should look the same. They have very strict rules for “uglies” and “pretties” so that there is as little chaos as possible.The main character is Tally Youngblood. In the beginning of the novel, she is about to turn sixteen and she wants nothing more than to turn “pretty.” She has fun by playing little pranks that “uglies” typically play, but nothing serious or harmful to anyone else. Her best friend Peris turned sixteen a couple months before her which means that he already turned “pretty” and had moved to New Pretty Town. One night, she snuck out of Uglyville after curfew to go see Peris in New Pretty Town. When she arrived, Peris was kind of upset that she was there because he was embarrassed to be seen with an “ugly.” Tally recognized that Peris was different now that he was “pretty” but she didn’t think much of it. Tally is the reason that the theme “people can change” is present throughout the novel. In the beginning, she is very excited to turn “pretty” because she thinks it will solve all of her problems. Soon after her altercation with Peris, she meets Shay. Shay is a very diverse and rebellious character that has a huge influence on Tally. Shay thinks that the surgery is the worst thing that could happen to her and she planned on running away to a smaller society known as The Smokes. Shay represents the theme of “finding ones identity.” From the time we meet her, she is curious and mischievous; you never know what she is going to do next. But, once she makes her way to The Smokes, she is happy with being “ugly” because she valued individuality over everything else. Towards the end of the novel, something happens to Shay that changes the game completely. In my opinion, the many plot twists throughout this novel made you want to never put it down.David is the second most influential character on Tally in the novel. In the beginning, he is spectacle about her intentions but they end up having a dynamic relationship with one another. He is the leader of the young people that live in The Smokes; he has never been to a big regulated city like Uglyville or New Pretty Town. David is a very genuine and wise character that is really good for Tally’s sanity. Westerfeld leaves you wondering what David is going to do next at the end of the novel and the suspense made Uglies even better.I personally really connected to this novel because of the pressure their society puts on people to fit the idea of “perfect” and I think that concept is very alive in our society today. For the characters, I connected with Tally the most because even though she makes many mistakes along the way, she really does what is best for her friends in the end and I feel like I have lived through situations where either I was the one who ultimately did what was best for my friends or one of my friends did.Westerfeld does a fabulous job of giving detailed descriptions of the cities that Tally and Shay visited. By the end of the novel, I had a detailed picture of Uglyville, New Pretty Town, Special Circumstances, and The Smokes in my head. I liked how he dove into Tally’s internal conflicts, such as her journey to The Smokes, her constant guilt, and her final surprising decision that could change everything. A good amount of the book is Tally talking to herself to get through the situations she gets herself into.I would recommend this book to people who are trying to find the courage to break away from the norm and really find themselves. It was very intriguing and the in-depth character descriptions made you feel like the main characters were your best friends that grew up with you. Oh, and I definitely plan on reading the second book of the series, Pretties!

I have been a PowerPoint user for many years, but 2010 was a wholesale change for me, so I wanted to brush up on basic new features in an organized way. I learned several things from this book that made it worth the price. Rather than used it in the suggested fashion (as a reference), I read it all the way through. If you want a clear, simple presentation of PowerPoint 2010, this is for you. Please note that not all of the books in this series are the same. They are by different authors and the clarity will not necessarily be the same.

Do not buy this book!! I have new reading glasses and still cannot read the screenshots, which are on every page of the book along with explanatory text. The screenshots are invaluable in figuring out how to use PowerPoint. I wish I had paid attention to others' reviews about this book when they pointed out this problem. Amazing that this book even got published like this!! I am going to purchase a different book.

My older parents wanted to learn how to use PowerPoint... and they reported back that this was a great book for them to learn. It is written in simple language for someone that is not very computer savy to learn PowerPoint.

If you are new to Power Point, just want a refresher, or need to know some advanced features, this book is for you. This book is not organized well but it does have a lot of useful photos. For more advanced users get something else.

If you use PowerPoint, this is a pretty good book. You will learn some tips and techniques to prevent "Death by PowerPoint" It may not make you the ultimate presenter, but it will make you better at what you do with PowerPoint.

I attended a workshop on how to us Microsoft 2010 Power Point to create book trailers. Being an author I felt I would give this a try. Between the workshop and the book I am halfway through creating my first book trailer that I plan to place on youtube by the fall.

It had been several years since I last upgraded my Powerpoint application and this book was very helpful in explaining the new features of Powerpoint. I would recommond the book to any past user of Powerpoint.

I bought this (along with a few other Quick Study charts) for my freshman college son who is studying business and accounting. He was incredibly pleased and happy with this chart and told me it was going to be immensely helpful to him in his studies - especially since his professor understood the material better than he was able to teach it. (A shame, that. But my son utilized study groups and materials to supplement the teacher's lack, of which this chart was one helpful component.)

Man I love this quick study guide. It basically contains my entire financial accounting book in only six pages! From the photo, I thought it was just one page but no it is folded into three pages full of writing front and back for a total of six pages. When I say it covers everything in my book, I mean literally everything I need to know and the beautiful part is it is in exactly the same order as the chapters in my book. For any freshman college student or someone that just wants to learn accounting, this is all you will need forget purchasing those overly priced books. The only thing I have noticed is that it does not include the formulas for things like current ratio, acid or quick test ratio, day's sales average, etc. Other than that this guide is amazing. It basically goes like this: the page in the thumbnail provided by amazon has information pertaining to a summary of chapter 1 and 2 of my book talking about the history of accounting, its origin, what is a debit/credit etc. The next page covers chapters 3-4 like in my book about the accounting equation, assets, etc. And it just continues in that order until you reach stocks bonds owners equity which are the last chapters of my book. You will definitely possess the same knowledge by reviewing this in comparison to someone sitting in class all day being lectured by a professor. Great product. I also purchased one for cost accounting as I could not understand what the book was talking about. These things are great!!

This is especially helpful for us non-account types. This Quick Study guide, in conjunction with the Accounting 2 Quick Study guide, the Accounting Equations & Answers Quick Study guide, and WIlliam G. Droms' book, "Finance and Accouinting for Nonfinancial Managers" go a long way to filling in the blanks for those of us whose focus is necessarily elsewhere.

Great quick intro guide for someone who has to teach themselves accounting and pass job exams!!!!!!☺☺☺☺☺

I bought this Quickstudy of Accounting I. It was all right in reading and reviewing at the fast glace. But some parts of the Accounting theories and mathematics calculations, you must study a text at first. It will be a good product for somebody who has already studied Accounting I and Accountin II. If you are currently taing Accounting I and II, may be moreefficient to read and review the text, and later review with this Qucikstudy.

I normally don't mind an informal tone but this book went too far. It's like someone rambling for hours. After a while it is annoying.There is absolutely no example of a plan. It gives the components of a plan and definitions. The only examples given are on financials. Other than that he says search the internet. What's the point of buying the book if that is all I am going to read?I regret purchasing this substandard book.

Shelton's clear and thoughtful approach to the steps in writing a business plan reveal he knows what he's talking about and can communicate it in clear and concise language. What I particularly like is the real life examples he gives to further your understanding. Chapter 13 on how to begin the financial section is not only a blueprint for how to do it, but also suggests how to think about it, what options you can choose in making your assumptions, then his recommendation of which is best. Other sections on financing your business are rich in info as well as in practical advice, again showing his lengthy experience and depth of knowledge. Anyone who needs a business plan couldn't do better than following this practical and well written guide to how to do one.

Hal is right on point with this book. Shelton presents an honest account of what a business plan should cover and get right in order to secure finance and to have the business taken seriously, especially during the early stages. It's a very short book, practically an essay, but very clear, very direct and very useful. I'd highly recommend this for anyone who is thinking seriously about starting their own business.

Yes, the book brings us in contact with some of the giants of American philosophy: Emerson, William James, Charles Peirce, and Josiah Royce. And from them we get doses of insight and wisdom aplenty. At the center of this book, however, are others. The private library of the once-famous Harvard philosopher Ernest Hocking is the setting for the story, as the author fondly works his way through the book collection and discovers, in the process, the fascinating lives of Hocking and his wife, Agnes. Making appearances in this book are such well-known figures as Robert Frost, Pearl S. Buck, and Gabriel Marcel. They, along with Hocking and other classic American philosophers, grappled with the meaning of life, with what makes a life significant. We follow Kaag as he elucidates their perspectives with careful fluency, attentive of strengths but cognizant of stumbles. He ends up trying to bridge the best of pragmatism and existentialism, a worthy endeavor. While Sartre often came up short, as Kaag notes, in the human dimension of solidarity (at least in his early work), Simone de Beauvoir faired much better, especially in her “The Ethics of Ambiguity.”One other strand needs to be noted. In this book, Kaag’s own life stands revealed, in a manner that is never cloying or disruptive. Like the philosophers with whom he spends his time, he is oftentimes a man adrift, searching, unwilling to settle for clichéd thought and existence. He is a person of parts, present but not obtrusive. We come to appreciate his journey and rejoice in its, if not final, then present path.This book will be of interest to anyone thinking about the essential problems of philosophy and life.

John Kaag's book, "American Philosophy: A Love Story" is deeply personal as well as philosophically insightful. Kaag, Professor of Philosophy at the University of Massachusetts, Lowell, writes for a broad audience and, in words he uses to describe his aim, "successfully bridges the gap between philosophical and creative writing". Kaag felt the force of doubts about the value of life that William James had addressed at Harvard in an 1895 lecture, "Is Life Worth Living?" Through a series of accidents, Kaag finds ways to keep going. He finds himself in a large, musty library in the New Hampshire mountains on an estate that belonged to the American philosopher William Ernst Hocking (1873 -- 1966) and was still owned by his family. Hocking was well-known during his lifetime but is little studied today. He was an idealist -- a philosopher who emphasizes the spiritual, mind-dependent character of reality -- influenced heavily by his teacher at Harvard, Josiah Royce I fell in love early with Kaag's book when I found out it was about Hocking. I have read Hocking's most famous book, "The Meaning of God in Human Experience" and reviewed it here on Amazon.The Meaning of God in Human Experience: A Philosophic Study of Religion (Classic Reprint)Kaag wins the trust of the Hocking family and begins a long project cataloguing the books in the philosopher's library, including many rare first editions. He is enamored to see first editions of Descartes, Hobbes, and Kant, but the books owned by the American philosophers whom Kaag has studied, frequently with their handwritten marginalia, win his heart. In the course of his project, Kaag firms up his resolve to get a divorce. He also begins a relationship with a colleague, a philosophical student of Kant, Carol, who assists him in his cataloguing. Over time, the two philosophers fall in love and marry.As the story progresses over three-years, Kaag gradually works out his feelings of guilt, anger, and helplessness over his father and his failed marriage. He also comes to rethink the philosophers he has studied and to understand better what he finds of value in the philosophical enterprise. Kaag discusses many philosophers in the book but the focus is on the great American philosophers, Emerson, Thoreau, James Peirce, Royce, Hocking and on the French philosopher Gabriel Marcel who learned from them in many ways. Kaag states his guiding theme and what he learns from his endeavors at the outset of the book."For American philosophers like James, determining life's worth is, in a very real sense, up to us. Our wills remain the decisive factor in making meaning in a world that continually threatens it. Our past does not have to control us. The risk that life is wholly meaningless is real, but so too is the reward: the ever-present chance to be largely responsible for its worth. The appropriate response to our existential situation is not, at least for James, utter despair or suicide, but rather the repeated, ardent, yearning attempt to make good on life's tenuous possibilities. And the possibilities are out there, often in the most unlikely places."Kaag's blossoming love flows together with the lessons he derives from the American philosophers with their independence, freedom, iconoclasm, and gradually developing sense of community to offset an earlier rugged individualism. In succeeding chapters, he offers short, pointed summaries of some of the thoughts of the philosophers, combining it with reflections on their lives. Biography is an important part of philosophy. Thus, Thoreau, for example, never married, was awkward with women (he suffered a rejection from a woman who had earlier rejected his brother) and is best-known for his short, solitary stay at Walden Pond. Several chapters are named for and develop philosophical texts. Thus, "The Will to Believe" examines James' famous essay on religious faith in the light of his relationship with a young woman. "Evolutionary Love" is the title of an essay by Charles Peirce which, for Kaag, celebrates Peirce's unconventional scandal-ridden second marriage to a woman of uncertain origin and the end of his first unhappy marriage. " Philosophy of Loyalty" is the title of a book by the American idealist philosopher Josiah Royce written at the time of the death of a beloved son. It is kind of a dry read, but that isn't what I disliked about it. It really would benefit from a glossary. The Psychology of Hearing has one, but this book does not, nor does it even hint at important vocabulary within the body of the text. When I'm looking for something and skimming the pages, it would help to have key points in bold like pretty much every other textbook I've ever used.There aren't too many people dropping $80 on this as a casual read, so if you're reading this then you're probably stuck with having to get this for a class so it really doesn't matter what the reviews say. You may love it, you may not. Good luck with it nonetheless. I hope that your instructor is engaging.
