It is well written, engaging, and very useful in all respects.

this has become my early morning "read" on many days...i can handle only several pages worth though...what he says and the way he says it has really brought me to having quite a thoughtful look back over my life...what i've done...what i've chosen...the way i've been...it's been a little unnerving at times...i have a lot to look back over...for me, it is a very important book to be reading right now...i'm drawn back to it again and again as the days pass by...often, i re-read sections to hear it again...get it more clearly...take it in...it's proving to be quite the source of therapy for my soul, which is very important at age 79 and a fella is wondering a bit, did i do ok? and more deeply still, what was it all about?.......and maybe deeper still, who am i now.......really? i highly recommend this little volume if your soul needs some searching too!

It is too bad that many folks will discount this book because it is (was) written by a psychiatrist. It is equally bad that many Protestants will avoid the book because of its Catholic heritage. I believe that even worse still, there will be those who miss the wisdom inside the pages of this book, who could benefit from the guidance and spiritual insight during their seasons of the dark night."At the outset I must confess that I am no longer very good at telling the difference between good things and bad things." -The Dark Night of the Soul; Gerald May, M.D.I rather wish the title of this book had been different. I think it gives a false impression of what the subject really explores; although, it does address the dark night of the soul. May uses the backdrop of the writings from St. Teresa of Avila and St. John of the Cross to lay his foundation for his exploration of the phenomenon of the "dark night" or spiritual darkness (which might also be known as spiritual awakening or enlightenment). I have read quite extensively from both Teresa of Avila and John of the Cross. Their writings can be something of a bit archaic depending on the translation and they can be somewhat romanticized within the context of their poetic settings. I say this to make a point that they can sometimes be difficult to completely understand. Despite his academic and clinical background, Dr. May writes clearly and in a very personal voice that I find very easy to grasp. His writing is warm, friendly, and very down-to-earth. He takes complex ideas and difficult situations and makes easy conversation with them. Not only was I enlightened by what I read, I was also comforted by someone whom I believe shared understanding of my circumstances and experiences.What might be the greatest contribution of this book in my opinion is the synergy that Dr. May creates between the spirit and the psyche... perhaps another way of saying this is the convergence of the soul and the spirit. While some voices would discount the science of psychology, I believe it is helpful for us to understand the workings of the mind and soul. God instructs us to love Him with all our "heart, soul, mind, and strength." It is obvious then, we should pay attention to these various facets that make up the essence of human beings. It is my opinion that Gerald May handles this material with humility and reverence, which helps in bringing attention to the work of God in the process of the dark night. It might be for this reason that I most liked chapter five, Three Signs and Three Spirits, where May teaches at length about the psychology of the dark night... very, very good instruction here."As John makes clear, it is not God who disappears, but only our concepts, images, and sensations of God." -The Dark Night of the Soul; Gerald May (p.146)Another very helpful chapter to me was chapter six, The Dark Night Today, where May discusses the dark night in modern contexts. While there is no substitute for reading the translated original writings from John and Teresa, Dr. May's exploration is arguably one of the best companion guides I have read to date and I have several expositions on the writings of Teresa and John in my personal library.The book includes a very well annotated notes section and an exhaustive index at the end of the book. Personally, I think this is a book every Christian should read and I am very glad I did.

The dark night and related soul transformation was an unfamiliar school of thought to me. Through his experience with psychiatric practices and psychological therapy, Dr May discusses meditation and contemplation and it's role in our spiritual journeys from darkness into light. This book draws from many rich sources of research, writings, and spiritual oracles and leaders. I highly recommend this to anyone unfamiliar with the dark night, or Teresa or John, or who desire to know more about related spiritual contemplation and healing.

A deeply insightful book. Mr. May illuminates the concept of "Dark Night of the Soul" as defined in classic Christian literature. Even more important and valuable though, at least to me, is that he makes the core concept and inherent confusion about these times in our lives simpler to grasp, and thus easier to accept. This was one of those books that made me stop every few pages, wipe off a few tears, take a few deep breaths, and burrow into it again. His gentle, conscious writing style is much appreciated, as is the logic and heart with which he makes the case. I bought two copies for friends already!

May's The Dark Night of the Soul is remarkable. To me and my spouse, May's book is a perfect combination of psychiatrist's perspective transposed over a spiritual experience. I really appreciate May's "interpretation" of John of the Cross and Theresa of Avila's seminal works. I have tried to read some of their original writings - along with other Christian mystics - and the ancient grammar, syntax and vocabulary make their works less than convenient for the modern reader to sort through. May has done all the sorting and more; making their immensely wise observations of the dark night, perceptible and recognizable. I also noted May's important distinction - apart from other writer's of The Dark Night - that dark night is not usually a single event, but more likely an ongoing experience of spiritual encounter with God.

OH, this book is so great! I have turned back to it time and time again. It is not just a one time read - it continues to edify throughout all stages of spiritual growth. If you are already acquainted with St John of The Cross and basics of Christian mysticism and looking for some much needed insight into how to make sense of confusing battles and struggles within your soul - this book will be a BLESSING to you! I am very thankful to have found this book.

My 9 y/o son was molested by a family member over a span of a few months. It was absolutely devastating for me. One of my fears was that he would turn around and offend against someone else and continue the cycle. I try to have an open dialogue with my kiddos. I want them to feel comfortable talking about anything with me. However, I was not raised that way and struggle knowing how to say things in the right way. Therapy wasn't much help. He acts fine so the therapist didn't really do much and decided that he didnt need regular visits after a few months. This book was AMAZING. It is able to describe things in the perfect way, exactly like I wish I knew how to say. We sat down and read it together. He listened very quietly and would ask questions from time to time. There are questions at the end of each chapter that encourage conversation and thought. It covers all areas of sex, love, sexuality, anatomy. I would recommend this book to EVERYONE looking for a way to talk to their kids about this awkward but necessary subject. My son is 11 now but I've also read it to his younger brother who is 9 now. I read it with each boy seperately so they would feel free to ask whatever they wanted. Thank you to the authors, THANK YOU! This has really been helpful for my sons to clear up any confusion.

Being a mom in a same-sex family, I've been looking for a book to read to my 5 and 7 year old children about sex, gender, and sexuality. This book covers the usual, but also identities outside of the traditional norms. The illustrations capture the kids attention, and the text discusses the topics in just the right detail. Most of all, I love the title, because at a young age, kids find the topic funny. Laughter is how many people deal with uncomfortable feelings, and I want my kids to be able to laugh now and adjust to talking about these things so as they grow older they feel comfortable coming to talk to us about questions they have. I highly recommend this book.

I left this book on my 9 year old’s bedside table for him to find. I walked in a while later and he was engrossed, reading in bed. I sat with him and said, “Sex is a funny word, isn’t it?” He agreed. He then flipped to the page that says it’s ok to talk about this stuff with people you trust and said, “Yeah, I trust my mom” and reached out to touch my arm. I think this is a good place to start an ongoing conversation. The book is written in comic book format which is familiar to him and easy for him to absorb the material. It’s a thick book though, so it will probably take him a few days to read it through, and then we can go back and talk about certain parts as they come up.What I was immediately impressed with was the illustrations and how the characters are presented—their personalities first, gender and preferences later. The characters seem very relatable. Overall, I’m happy with this purchase.

I'm a trauma therapist that works with children who have been sexually abused. This is one of the best books I have used. Not only is it amazing and diverse with children's education and raising awareness, it has a special section to explain to children about the inappropriateness of sexual abuse. It is one of the first books I have used that directly addresses this. All the other information is also very helpful. I highly recommend any child therapist to purchase this book.

This book had several issues for me. I personally did not like the language of how it discussed the issues, but I understand that sex is a sensitive topic to discuss with kids and that comfort level will vary widely with people. I'm pretty liberal, and this book was very liberal. Again, not the worst thing, but just sharing. But the worst part about this book is how incredibly small the type is. Does not make for an easy/pleasant read at all, and I don't even need reading glasses!

I honestly didn't mean to buy the Kindle version of "Alias." I was 100% set on waiting for the audio to come out, because I love the British narration. Well, I made the mistake of reading the first couple of chapters on Amazon and I couldn't help but purchase right away. Then, I really tried taking my time to finish it, but that proved impossible as well.There's a reason Cari Hunter is my all-time favorite author (any time someone asks, she's at the very top of my top 10 list). The book pulls you in right away. There's never a dull moment, and you really fall in love with the characters. And there's a certain "feeling" you get. A feeling that puts you right into the book alongside the characters and makes you feel a bit empty when it ends. Hunter makes her characters feel like close friends.All in all, I have to say that reading on my Kindle was a positive experience and will probably improve my audio experience when the audible version is ready (and yes, I'll be re-reading it on audio right away, as soon as it's available later this month). Hunter uses a lot of very non-American words and having the book on Kindle allowed me to look them up.Like Cari Hunter's other books, this will be one I'll undoubtedly re-read multiple times, if only for that certain "feeling."

Cari Hunter never disappoints and may very well be my favorite author. I have grown to love Cari's writing, and have always found her books to be exciting, and even frightening at times. Alias was no exception. I liked the fact that she drifted a little farther west this time, leaving the Peaks and delving into the Welch highlands. Having been there quite a few times, once to climb Snowdon (what was I thinking), I felt at home in her descriptions of the place. Manchester, with all its seedy neighborhoods, and the frightening mess that DC Alis Clarke finds herself in, sets the tone for a twisted tale of illicit drugs, murder and police corruption. DS 'Bron' Pryce is a hard one to make, although I never would have suspected what eventually happened, until it did.The story never lets up until the very end, as in all of Cari's books, and was a nail biter; extremely hard to put down. I know that Cari has announced her upcoming book, so I can rest easy knowing that another fabulous creation is in the works. I definitely recommend Alias, but as with all Cari's books, be prepared for the blunt delivery and unpolished realities she depicts so vividly in her writing.Awesome book, great read!

I really thought I would love this story. It started entriguing and very promising, but it turned very slow and frustrating. The uncovering of the facts were the most frustrating. The story picked up about 80% into the book and unwinds very quickly. There was little romance between the main characters. The love making happened late in the book & was sudden & very physical. At least the characters were very real & the action parts were realistis. There was no unbelievable heroic behavour from the main characters. They showed fear, pain and uncertainty, but found strength in each other.

The book intrigued me, but I soon discovered the language was very difficult for me to follow. I have read many books by English authors and had no problems. This book is very localized, I had to google every other word to understand what I was reading. The story drags on, the romance is minimal, bottom line, I did not enjoy this book at all.

Hunter's series deserves far more stars than it's getting. I feel that too much lesfic offers too much fluff - cotton candy instead of an banquet or a feast. This series is one of the few that I will pay money for - along with Andrea Bramhall's Norfolk series - and take the time to comment on. Rumor has it this series may be at its end. Too bad, we could use more like it.

I just finished reading this great novel. If you like a good thriller/mystery with a touch of romance on the side, you will enjoy this novel. Personally I liked that the romance was secondary and the plot was focused on the mystery the main characters were working on. 📕📙📘📗📓

I discovered this author recently and will read her stories as quickly as I can. They are great stories and will leave you wanting more. I am hoping she will do more with these two main ladies because the chemistry is excellent....and the humor kept me laughing and in my toes. Enjoy!!

Another home run. Hunter delivers another riveting page turner. The person who gave it 2 stars didn't read the same book I did! I hope there's a second coming.

A must read for any cat owner or animal lover. This book is packed with useful and interesting information on cats and cat behavior. I've read many different cat books, and this book had new information that was very helpful and applicable. Very informative. I definitely feel like I understand my cat better after reading this book. I (and my cat) would HIGHLY recommend this. Two paws up!

I loved this book, and, no I'm not a 70 year old "cat lady". Actually, I'm a middle aged guy that got tired of trying to figure what my daughter's cat was whining about. Long story short, my new fuzzy pal and I now exchange nose bumps, trills and toy fun. As bizarre as it seems, we seem to communicate, and it's fun.

When I selected 'purchase' I knew the short story would not be part of Radclyffe's, Honor's Series or even one of her First Responder's novels. I knew this story would be short, sweet, and to the point. And it was. It was a sweet, heartfelt, coming of age story.Thank you Radclyffe, for the fifteen-twenty minute reality break, but I was disappointed when I flipped to the last past and the story ended. I wanted more...

This was a very good book to read and I just got done reading it. The book is only two hundred and eight pages. I wish it was longer and there was a series of books. The main person in the book is Marie-Claire and its set in the 1940's. Marie-Claire ends up getting TB and going to the hospital. While there she as grate loss and also makes a life for herslef. I found myslef wonding if the story was true but its not.

I want to know what happens next that is a five star rating. I want a sappy, happy ending in my reads and that's a five star rating. Those wanting to read for the good outcomes in a story then go for it.

Beautifully written. Painfully tender. Heartbreaking . Wow. Short and sweet. That says it all. Blink and you'll miss it. Just as stolen kisses often are.

Great short story , now if they would just come back and finish it . I love these authors I continue to find their storytelling to be captivating .

A very quick read, wanted it to continue, way too short of a read.

The audio book is fabulous. The narrator is soooooo good!

Really quick delivery and the book is what I expected.

What an incredible set of books. I had to take frequent breaks from reading because of the disturbing details. I love Ryan Green's books. He brings these stories to light and makes you feel like you are looking over the shoulder of these heinous murderers. If you want to read about true crimes that have taken place in the USA, the UK and Australia, this is a set of books that you must read.

Ryan Green is one of my favorite authors. His descriptive narrative of the life and times of the killers makes you almost feel as though you were there. He doesn't sugarcoat their deeds. He doesn't make them seem to be anything but what they are - killers. But, he does almost make you feel sorry for them - but just almost.

I truly love the style of Ryan Green's writing, It is very informative, detailed yet extremely entertaining. The stories are true but are told in such a way that they are made unbelievable to the human mind. Very spellbinding and thrilling! I highly recommend Ryan Green's true crime books!

This was an interesting and informative set of books. I like that the books are are not full of annoying errors. The stories are more graphic than I have been used to reading. I am pleased to have found this author.

I read each of these books when they first came out. Like, the minute they dropped. Ryan Green is brilliant. He has researched his work extremely well and presents it in a highly fascinating, albeit disturbing, way. But then, what about true crime isn't disturbing? Ryan has a way of putting you in the head of the killer while at the same time in the hearts of the victims and their loved ones. It's like reading the story from the inside out. The killers he writes about are brutal, and he spares no detail. I like to think I am a true crime aficionado, and Ryan's books are some of the very best I have read. If you like true crime, you'll love Ryan Green's books.

Ryan Green is one of my favorite true crime authors. His writing style is very unique, and he really makes you feel like you are part of the story. He does a terrific job of putting you in the middle of each of these stories while sticking to the facts. If you are a fan of true crime stories, or just excellent writing, make sure you pick this collection up! You'll not be able to put it back down!

I found the books to be utterly disturbing. It's horrifying to me that this author can narrate the unknown stories of the murderers and their victims. I might find the narrative less sensationalized if there were an indication of research. Too perverse for my tastes

I've read each of these titles as they came out and highly recommend them all. Starting with his first collection, which was very much a reporting style to these books which come from the view of the protagonist is very well written and suck you in almost immediately. While you may sympathize at times with the person, their actions will disturb you.
