Patricia Leavy, PhD, is an independent sociologist and former Chair of Sociology and Criminology and Founding Director of Gender Studies at Stonehill College in Easton, Massachusetts. She is the author, coauthor, or editor of over 25 books, and the creator and editor of seven book series. Known for her commitment to public scholarship, she is frequently contacted by the U.S. national news media and has regular blogs for The Huffington Post,The Creativity Post, and We Are the Real Deal. She is also co-founder and co-editor-in-chief of the journal Art/Research International. Dr. Leavy has received numerous awards for her work in the field of research methods, including the Distinguished Service Outside the Profession Award from the National Art Education Association, the New England Sociologist of the Year Award from the New England Sociological Association, the Special Achievement Award from the American Creativity Association, the Egon Guba Memorial Keynote Lecture Award from the American Educational Research Association Qualitative Special Interest Group, and the Special Career Award from the International Congress of Qualitative Inquiry. Patricia Leavy does it again! This is truly a tome of the finest kind. Subtle when it needs to be. Obvious when it devours and reveals esoteric problems in plain language. An essential contribution to qualitative methods and the foundations of arts-based research. Wherever we go from here in the field will have to use this comprehensive and comprehensible collection as its launching point. Congratulations Patricia!

The ultimate go-to reference or teaching text for anyone interested in the art-research connection. Diverse topics and writing styles keep it interesting (no easy task at 738 pages). I love the inclusion of disciplines often ignored such as neuroscience, chemistry, and business. Leavy’s introductory and concluding chapters are terrific. I think the previous review was great, so I will only add a few things from my perspective. I loved this book. I have been a church music director for the past two and a half years, and absolutely love Paul Baloche's music. It was such a joy to read this book, to learn about how some of the most popular Christian songs came to be, and to just hear from some of the greats in CCM. I would say that the book is dominated with how to write songs. That wasn't really what I was looking for when I started the book, but I definitely feel inspired to start trying.I wish there were a sequel to this book about how to select worship songs and put them together into sets. Of course I know the basics: similar keys, similar themes, etc. However, I would have liked to hear from these great worship leaders about their methods on how they put together a worship list on a given Sunday. I really do think that it could fill another whole book!

Terrific content. A good discussion starter for anyone interested in learning more about worship songwriting. Solid advice. Obviously some theological streams will find a few things to quibble about - no one can please everyone - but none of this keeps it from being a helpful resource.The only thing that keeps it from being five stars is the unreasonably high price. I bought my copy used and it was still over $25.This would be a must read if it was priced to match the market. ($15-25 New in paperback?) As it is, it's too expense to wholeheartedly recommend. For example, I was going to use this as a text for a class I'm teaching on worship song writing. As it is, the new price pricing levels make this impractical.

There's a growing trend in contemporary Christian churches where the worship pastor(s) introduce original songs to their congregation. While not obligated to, many worship pastors have a creative side that bubbles up in their private worship and other times and for many there is a difficult bridge to cross to take their God-inspired and God-driven musical ideas and melodic prayers and put them in a form suitable for corporate worship; that's where God Songs comes in.As a musician and worshiper who is not a worship pastor (but very interested in the subject), I feel the book does a good job of laying a foundation for the basics of what makes a good worship song and how a great worship song may differ from other forms of popular music and does (for the most part) a good job validating the ideas presented. It also has a chapter on music theory that focuses in on theory in relation to contemporary worship songs, I found this part of the book especially interesting. The stories behind some of todays most famous worship songs were also very good.The book assumes you know how to play an instrument (piano or guitar) and you already know the basics of music theory; it assumes you're already a songwriter looking to expand your knowledge of worship songwriting.If you want to hear these techniques applied, check out Paul Baloche's latest album A Greater Song. Paul is an worship pastor trainer, worship pastor and recording artist.

Inromative, for worship musicians.

While this book is full of good advice and many concepts that I would never think of on my own, the only thing I found it lacking was that it was very rigid in it's concepts about what sounds good. But I suppose after you've mastered many of these concepts you'll be able to emulate the great Christian songwriters, who probably never learned this stuff.

The author has the appearance of writing in a conversational style, but the book doesn't have much substance or originality behind it. The idea of diversity being valuable is nothing new. Complexity as a diverse population of connected agents doesn't tell you much. He's explaining complexity using more complex words, fluff, and metaphors. all of which is apparent in an online course he teaches, along with this and other books. One particular review says it best.What I got out of this course is given in the course description, which summarizes the totality of the content in a few simple points. What makes a system complex as defined by the science of complexity? The answer lies in the presence of four factors:• A population of diverse agents, all of which are • Connected, with behaviours and actions that are • Interdependent, and that exhibit • Adaptation.There you have it. That’s the course. I agree that the course contains some insights, but I wouldn’t say it is “filled” with them.Topics are brought to your attention such as discovering that (not “how”) your own consciousness is perhaps the ultimate example of a complex system, as billions of neurons coalesce and communicate to create the mystery of awareness. There is neither satisfying explanation nor insight here.Don't try to impress me with your command of scientific or higher rhetoric. He also kept throwing out the names and publications of other authors, including subtitling their names and showing a copy of the books in full colour. I had the impression I was watching an infomercial each time and that Professor Page was getting paid commissions for each book he mentioned, which were far too many and of no relevance given the amount of time that was given to them.

i love this book!!!! was fantastic to read and so understood what he meant when he said the ambiguity of definitions can get one stuck in the mud and trying to understand this topic. Then he does show, definitions are, relevant to context of discussion. the definitions have to be tweaked evovle with the topic in general as applied to different scenarios.My opinion only, this book is a classic,, and just one of many on this topic that is good to read. But I like the style of writing, insights, not to difficult to understand, but you will have to stop and think about some of his thoughts, but i like books that make you do that, feels like conversation. He does try to get away from pure mathematics but at same time he includes it, but you can still get much from reading this book even if the math is not your favorite topic, the way you process understanding ideas. I suggest, try the sample first, then buy the book if you like the sample. You feel a wisdom in the writing. that admits what is known, and not known. many today write not willing to admit limitations in knowledge, and that gets annoying because good research always admits limitations. Again, my opinion only, and no i'm not new to this topic, so i did have prior knowledge on this topic before I started reading this book.

I was disinclined to like this book even though I am a product of one of Page's academic departments at Michigan.Too many books based on formal modeling are based on assumptions that have little bearing on what actually happens in the world I work in where, models or not, our job is to foster cooperation in conditions of diversity and complexity.Much too my surprise, I really like his use of formal modeling techniques and his ability to bring them down (near) the level of mere mortals who lack his economic and mathematical sophistication. I agreed with his conclusion at least in part because I wanted to.But seriously, the logic in his arguments contains germs of ideas we who work in the applied field should pay attention and even more than critics of cooperative problem solving ignore at their empirical and normative peril.

If you are looking for research to introduce you to the role of diversity in complex adaptive systems, then you must start with Page's book. It explains the layered foundations of "how diversity happens, how it is maintained, and how it affects complex systems." This book examines the multi-level aspects of diversity (i.e., types, community compositions and interaction structures).

Cool book taking a different approach to diversity (not in the demographic sense, but in a biological sense)--give some good foundational ideas.

Scott Page is one of the better teachers around, writes clearly, and is a solid mathematician. On the other hand, the book is accessible to anyone who managed to get through 8th grade algebra.

Its much better content than previous workbooks we have bought. It's geared towards educators, so its slightly tougher for parents to adequately use it as there are many references to what was discussed in class. We'd love a version where it provides the parent with the full lesson plan to better utilize the tools within for the child's benefit. The way they teach math now versus when we were kids is very different. We used this as a prep for 7th grade as our child happens to be in a school where the curriculum isn't up to standard in our opinions and based on testing and grade result from K-6. Each school year and/or summer we use a workbook to keep our child engaged and so they do not fall backwards. As a supplement tool to help us be able to teach the new methods, we did searches on the internet and used video tutorials that schools put out there for the concepts we couldn't readily explain in the new way.

Follows CA common core curriculum closely and even shows the corresponding state standard for each topic. My daughter needs extra test practice for her finals so she found these questions useful. Mixture of straightforward questions and on more complex "apply your skills" word problem per standard. The answer key was useful as it helps students understand why the answer is what it is.My main gripe with this book is the lack of content - I wish that there were more questions. For each standard, there are around 3-4 questions and my daughter was able to a term's worth of test in about 30 minutes.There are 48 pages of questions, each standard has it's own page. For the price, it does seem very expensive - one to check out from a library if you can.

It was not what it appeared. It is a very small workbook with various math. Not really teaching but more of a short review book. Would not recommend. I tried to return the book but there are no returns on this item. DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!

Son's first teaching 7th grade math and the reviews were of great help. He loves the book and knows he will use. He teaches Common Core and STEM, so plans to use pages as additional assignments for students who need to get extra credits. He wants his students to be the best, so mom is glad she made a good Christmas chose!

This is a small, but nice set of math problem work sheets and exercises that align with the Common Core teacher standards for Grade 7 mathematics. It's nice, but pretty straight forward worksheets. There are not many "hands-on" exercises here, but I believe that I can modify some of the worksheets to include hands-on or kin-esthetic activities.If your child needs extra practice, this is a nice resource also, because your child will not be overwhelmed by a huge book. I really like it, and believe that this will be very useful for Grade 7 math (Pre-Algebra)

Pages unorganized. Would be much easier to find specific concepts if they were grouped by topics or if there was an index. Very few problems on each page. Problems are either very easy or difficult. Completion would NOT be a good measure of understanding. Disappointed :(

This book is mainly just full of worksheets with little to no instruction on how to complete the problems. I was hoping to use this during summer to help a child I work with prepare for the next year. I was hoping more for an example and then more problems.

One of my past students needed help and I recommended this book to her parents but made it a gift from me to her. She is one of my past 1st grade students who was very good at Math but was struggling in 8th grade. The parents are thankful because she successfully ended the school year with help from the quick guide.

About the Author

After studying art and architecture at the Cooper Union in New York City, Anthony Iannacci moved to Milan, where he established himself as an art critic, journalist, and curator. During his eleven-year tenure there, he was published regularly in Artforum, Artscribe, and Vogue Italia. He also orchestrated exhibitions across Northern Italy and consulted with collectors and dealers on American artists. Upon returning to New York, Iannacci dedicated his professional efforts to publishing volumes on architects and designers; he founded Edizioni Press, and, later, Architecture/Interiors Press in Los Angeles. He currently edits and art directs books on design, interior design, and architecture.

And once you do sit down with it - whoops! there went 3 hours! Seriously, if I had not bought this book for myself as a treat, I would be hounding my family members to get it for me as a birthday gift.The photos. THE PHOTOS! They are as perfect as they can be. Oozing style. I instantly felt more stylish just from having the book in my house.I dare you to buy it and not give it 5 stars. This is the book all other design books aspire to be.

I absolutely love this book. Great for a peek into homes of some of the best designers. If you are interested in California / LA style this is the perfect book - would make a nice gift, too!

Although most examples were done in a contemporary/minimalist design, I am very happy with this book.

Of course I loved it and its a great example of design in Los Angeles. Im featured in it as well. A perfect gift or addition to any cool library or coffee table book collection.

This book is my first experiance with the RPG version of Warhammer 40k,however I have played the table game. This book in my opinion is for those who relish the concept of playing a space marine. If the player is not really in to playing a very powerful genetically altered elite military character and would rather adventure, then he should consider "Rogue Trader" instead.This is a book of many layers of Space Marine flavor to be enjoyed. There are so many choices of traits,talents,specialties,Marine Chapter talents,Death Watch chapter talents,(Special artifacts:weapons,armor,energy shields,bolters,swords),fate points,special ammo,etc.. This book even has some of the originating chapters that can be played instead.There are enough beginning enemies and some information for creating enemies to allow for plenty of campaigns.The horde rules were a great idea,because these characters do tend to get really powerfull, so it allows the group or a single marine to fight small and large groups of enemies with easy to follow rules and damage.On the flip side,I did not care for the squad rules. I think that they could have been made easier to use.The only issue that could cause trouble is the players themselves if they try to take it all in at once. It would be better to start basic as a group. Then season to taste a little at a time. The options are endless. Ive played DnD,Savage Worlds,CyberPunk,and MD20. I know some parties are big on the maximum equipment and abilities while others are more interested in role-playing. This book is a tool box for either one. Rule lawyers beware. This is not the international law book on how to play space marines,but rather lots of options to fit different kinds of game masters and or parties.

To start off, if you are going to be the GM, be prepared to read... alot. I'm the GM of my group and we just ran through a deathwatch session after about a month of prep (mostly on my end). I did not start off with either dark heressy or rogue trader and only one of my players is involved with a dark heressy game, so the majority of the group was completely new to the system. I spent hours reading and re-reading (and I should probably read some more still). Simply put, there's a ton of information that you have digest to run the game, but our first session (running the provided adventure) was a blast and can't wait for the next session. There's nothing I can say that other reviewers haven't already stated so I'm just gonna throw in my more important thoughts. The production value is impressively high, the content (while overwhelming at times) is amazingly detailed and the overall experience (for my group) was extremely rewarding. Definately glad I decided to give it a try. A suggestion to those who haven't played DH or RT or just aren't entriely comfortable with the system, I highly recomment the GM kit.

This is a great game if you are a fan of Space Marine's and combat. This game is light on RPG elements, but heavy on combat. Execllent for any Space Marine player. The book would have got 5 star except for the lay out. Very clunky, it's design goes against how you would think intutively it should be put together. I have run the game 4 times and I'm still picking up rules. The villian entries are very different from Pathfinder or D&D entries in that Talent dictate every aspect. If you don't know a talent you are missing a major part of the monster's ability.Overall a great book and the art is excellent. Game is fun and very popular with my group. I would and have recemended this game.

Waiting for a space marine only version of the rpg game got my hopes set a little high. They included a handful of the loyal chapters they left a lot out more. The rules overall should mesh pretty seamlessly with Dark Heresy and even Rogue Trader. I can't wait for the expansion books for this series. Great adventures and lots more lethal killing will make for a faster paced game for sure. It will be nice to be able to finally play a space marine instead of running from them. It gets 5 stars from me because it's just about perfect. With a little modification to the starting rules it plays great.

Excellent idea because who doesn't want to play a Space Marine? However, considering the other Warhammer 40K roleplaying books by Fantasy Flight Games, Space Marines are to over powered for normal challenges. The whole system suffers from imbalance because in some cases the characters seems so powerful, and in others they seem powerless. It's difficult to run with certain groups.

The 40K game a lot of us had been waiting for since '87 or so. Adeptus Astartes RPG rules - what's not to love? Not sure why it had to be Deathwatch rather than "Space Marines" (I get that GW licensed 'Space Marine' to THQ, but this is not a competing product)Character creation is a bit hairy, but the mechanics are far more solid than I expected. If you've played Dark Heresy or Rogue Trader the mechanics are all but identical. However, Astartes are combat monsters and can easily break other 40K games.If you're not familiar with the Games Workshop Warhammer 40,000 universe, this might not be a good entry point though. The rules are tightly tied to the universe and the back story and the game isn't easily portable to another setting.
