Posnanski does a masterful job relating the experiences of Buck O'Neil in a world that could have caused him to become cynical. Here is a tribute to how positive attitude can conquer life's difficulties. This was especially significant for those of us in our waning years to whom baseball was summer! It was the only game and it was played by every American regardless of race or ethnicity. This book is a must read for everyone who respects the game and those who loved to play it. Heck, it's a must read for everyone who loves a great story!

I could belabor an in-depth review, but I urge you to immerse yourself in this amazing work of love. Posnanski accomplished the miraculous: he was with this book but not of it. Unlike so many sports bios that worship the subject (or the writer), Posnanski puts all ego aside and takes us on a journey through Buck's eyes - eyes that have seen much, seen the breadth and depth of the U.S. I went shopping for a book on the history of the Negro Leagues, but all were dry histories. Then Joe P. introduced me to Buck, and I found riches that transcended baseball.This book digs deep into so many subjects:, I would use it in a sports management class, a history class, a journalism class (not just sports journalism), a literature class, a sociology class...However, I just happen to be a professor, so please indulge me that list. Most of all, if you want to read because you love baseball, African-American U.S. history, events current and 50 years past, grab & eat this book. It doesn't matter if you dislike baseball or sports or biographies because this book uses these aspects as part of the overall vision of a life well-lived.Most of all, if you want to know how to live a virtuous, positive, genuine life that touches all you meet, then meet Buck O'Neill. There are angels all around us, and Buck (and Joe P.) is blessed to be a blessing.

This book is not just about baseball or just about Buck O'Neil. This is a story of people and their flaws and quirks, of what it means to be an American, of hope. It is not heartwarming in the schmaltzy sense of the word. It uses baseball and the story of Buck O'Neil to take an unflinching look at many hard things of life and yet still find joy in the midst of it. Beautiful prose and even occasional poetry are constant through the book, much like the game of baseball itself. If you are a baseball fan or simply want a poignant story, read this. "The Soul of Baseball" is a passionate, perceptive, playful, pleasant, poetic, poignant and provocative book based on a year in the life of 93-year-old Buck O'Neil. It is a wonderful wedding of author and subject. Buck O'Neil was a good baseball player, but his "superpower" seemed to be his ability to make people feel good. Joe Posnanski is up to the task of writing about so worthy a subject. He is observant without being cynical. He is lyrical without being sentimental. I loved Buck's scouting report: "His heart was willing, but his rump was gone." The book is full of humor, oral history and folksy philosophy. The only time I thought the author was trying too hard to be cute was when he tried to make a joke about Arlen Specter. The joke would have been funny if it was about some other senators, but it didn't really apply to Specter and fell flat. Almost all the rest of the book was smooth baseball jazz.

All you can say is what a kind man. This book is the best book on baseball I've every read. It's the best because it doesn't have numbers and stats. It indeed captures not only the Soul of Baseball but the Soul of a Great Person. If you are ever n KC be sure to go to 16th and Vine and tour the Negro League Museum. Hopefully you'll get to met Mr. Bob Kendricks. Tell him hello.

A beautiful book about a beautiful man. Joe Posnanski captures the essence of Buck O'Neil's positive attitude and inner strength which overcame life's difficult and challenging circumstances. Buck did not allow bitterness to enter his heart. He overcame injustice by counting his blessings and persevering.The book is very well written. Hard to put down. Familiar stories about Buck's life in baseball are brought new life through Posnanski's writing. The author does this great man justice by showing us Buck in intimate detail. Buck loved life. He loved people. He loved baseball. One cannot read this and not love Buck.The best of the books about Buck O'Neil.

This is a book about love for fellow human beings, disguised as a book about baseball. There is as much love in Buck O'Neil's heart as the entire New Testament. A wonderful man that I wish I would have known.Young men, read this book. Learn a little history, and some appreciation for what you have. Author and subject were a perfect match. Let's hope 2020 sees an injustice corrected..

Awesome book, not just about baseball but about life. Highly recommended. Probably my favorite baseball book, if not then it's gotta be in the top 3. As a Royals fan, I'm used to hearing about Buck O'Neil and have visited the Negro Leagues Museum in KC a couple times so that probably makes it even better for me.

What an absolutely beautiful book! From the first page to the last, I made more effort throughout the day to pray to Our Lord, to the Blessed Mother and to this sweet stalwart of patience and devotion; St. Joseph.Whether the writings in it were inspired or whether they were just the meditations of a good woman is no matter. In fact, I've got a pretty skeptical eye and I did not read this with the firm certainty that the text was an absolute truth of the life of St. Joseph. I'll tell you with sincerity though, that every page made me want to be a better person - actively.I strongly recommend reading this book as a meditation on the life of Christ, the Blessed Mother and sweet St. Joseph. I do not think you will be disappointed.

We are not even beginning to come close to the depths of St. Joseph. We have not even begun to scratch the surface of who this man truly is. He is a treasure once found... should forever be embraced.This book as well as "Joseph, Shadow of the Father" and "The Life and Glories of St. Joseph" should not be missed. Read these books and pray, read these books and ponder, read these books and marvel at the man, who like Our Blessed Mother, will lead us to heaven and to Our Lord while grasping our hand and never letting it go, as long as we allow him to.

This book was entertaining and moved along at a good pace. The only complaints I have about the book is that you can tell the book is written by someone who has NOT spent anytime in Punxsutawney:1. There is no multiplex theater in Punxsutawney. There is a community center that shows one movie on the weekend nights.2. There is no mall in Punxsutawney. The closest mall to Punxsutawney is 20+ miles away.3. There is no classes for Teens at the local Catholic school. So, teens she saw in school uniforms would have gone to the Christian school, not the Catholic school.4. Nobody, and I mean, NOBODY ever calls it Punx High. It is Punxsy High. Punx is not a shortened form for Punxsutawney that anybody uses.5. The old person's home in Punxsy does not have a movie theater, rec room, and arcade room.Otherwise, it's a cute story. If it wasn't for the fact that the main character repeats a day over and over like in the movie, Groundhog Day, this book could have been set in any small town.

This book started out really sweet, and continued in the same manner all the way through. As someone who was a teenager in the 80s and still loves all things 80s, especially the movies from that time period. Sixteen Candles and Weird Science, as well as Ferris Bueller's Day Off, were staples from my middle and high school years. The movies that I watched over and over. While I did watch The Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink, the first I enjoyed more when I got older, and the second, well, I'm not actually the biggest fan of that movie. So the fact that the main character in this book, Andie, isn't as thrilled with it either, won me over to her right away. Not to mention her thoughts on the prom dress that Molly Ringwald's character remade in the movie Pretty in Pink totally mirror my own. Of course the awkwardness of Andie's "meet-cute" with Colton, and Tom, is something that sounds like my kind of luck as well.I also am a fan of the movie Groundhog Day, and I loved that this one was a teen version. The references to movies that Andie pulls to try to help with her experiences is so me, and something I would do, or something my family would do. So to me, this was a perfect story. I liked how she learned that different cliques weren't always the way we stereotype them, and that she kind of started with a group that is almost always vilified, the cheerleaders. The fact that they were such a great bunch of girls really, and the whole Maya house thing, that was awesome! I enjoyed how she seemed to try different groups at first. When she figured out that she wasn't maybe meant to be what she'd originally wanted, or that was at least not the way to get out of her time loop, she went to the goths. And I love that she chose a costume from Beetlejuice! Again, the movie nerd in me loved it. In theh end, the way that she finally ended up breaking the cycle was perfect. It wasn't too easy, or simple, and it took a lot to really get it the right way. A lot of things that she thought that didn't work out the way she planned and led into the perfect night, or ending you might say.Now, I do wonder if really she would have caught on and tried for a different type of ending earlier, before going with the goths, but if she had, that would have led to a much shorter story, or at least she wouldn't have learned quite all that she did about the different groups. That leads me to another point. I loved how she ended up realizing that the group of people who didn't quite fit into any group, was just as bad, or worse at times, at stereotyping the others. I've seen that. The people that felt picked on, but all I ever saw was them making fun of, or picking on the very people that they said acted that way to them.I really hope or guess I could say that I would LOVE to see this as a movie. If only John Hughes was still around, because he'd be perfect to make this one.

A mash-up of Pretty in Pink, Breakfast Club, and Groundhog Day? Yes, please! When I saw the title of this book, I knew I had to read it, but I was skeptical that it could be done successfully. I'm soooo glad I was wrong! I loved everything about Pretty in Punxsutawney. Andie is a great character with a perfect character arc. She starts out a little nerdy and shy, but hopeful that she can get that perfect first kiss from Colton, once he realizes they are meant to be, of course. When her first day of school goes horribly wrong, however, Andie despairs of ever getting a boyfriend. Too bad she gets to re-do that first day over and over, sometimes okay, sometimes awful, but never getting the guy of her dreams. So Andie makes it her mission to do some good, and overturn the heirarchy of cliques that make up her new high school. Along the way she learns a lot about herself, about love, and about what is really important.

I have really enjoyed the series thus far, despite the fact that there are some things about this author's writing style that have begun to bother me, about half way through the second book.The characters Breene creates are unique and engaging, with personalities that are well thought out. Their interactions are fun and entertaining. They argue and disagree often while still learning to trust one another and work together. This is one area where the author excels. The romance between Shanti and Cayman is a little predictable, but at least isn't too distracting.Warning, very minor spoilersThe main issue I have with the story in Hunted is the main antagonist. He is supposed to be this badass hunter that everyone is afraid of. The problem being, we know little to nothing about him except for the fact that he is supposed to be scary. How do we know he's scary? Well, because everyone in the book is afraid of him for some reason. Including Shanti who is supposedly the best and strongest warrior in all the land. Instead of giving us a reason to be afraid of him, Breene telegraphs his scariness by making everyone act afraid of him. If you look at the hunter objectively, there seems to be very little reason for the fear he inspires. 1. He's a good Hunter, maybe the best in the world. Okay... I still think Shanti could kick his ass. Or Cayan. Hell, probably Sanders. I'm sorry, just saying he's a Hunter isn't scary. Give me an example, a reason Shanti, the best damn fighter in the land, might be afraid of him. 2. When Shanti first met him, he noticed her bra was the wrong material. Okay, so he's observant, and smart. Still not scary. 3. He has strong sharshers (where did they come from again?) that are nearly as strong as Shanti. This is where it fell apart for me. The rules of magic in this book are too inconsistent. Suddenly using a couple minutes of strong magic is enough to exhaust her, where she could go for hours before (This is a separate gripe of mine, Breene still hasn't defined the rules of magic in her world, and the rules seem to change based on what's convenient in that moment of the story).I think the problems with the hunter is just one example of this series' major storytelling issue. There is too much happening in this world that has not received an explanation. Another example of this is the idea of gifts and the rules behind this system of magic. We're told that there are different kinds of gifts. Still, I don't understand what is so special about Shantis's gift or how it is supposedly different from others in this world. I know she is more powerful. I know she can influence people around her. But the author has never really clarified how this is different exactly from other gifts. In fact, most gifts seem strikingly similar a fact that is reinforced by Shanti's ability to learn the "tricks" used by other gifted. The reader is left guessing since we are never given a direct explanation about how these gifts work and much of the context we are given is contradictory.In closing, I really do enjoy this book. I hope you enjoy it as much, and hopefully some of these issues are ironed out as the story progresses.

I read ALOT of fantasy with female main characters. Lately there's been this trend of female MCs who I assume are supposed to come off as quirky, witty, relatable and endearing. In my opinion they tend to come off as petulant, impulsive, whiny, dramatic bratts who complicate their own lives and the lives of those around them. Shanti is not that character. She's the perfect balance of brains, humor, badassery and big hearted. She thinks before she makes any moves, especially how said moves will affect the people she cares about. She doesn't pout or whine and justify her mistakes. She's all woman, not childish.The world building is minimal, allowing for full focus on the characters and plot. The romance is in the back seat in this series. Sooo refreshing. I'm getting the sense shanti and cayan are "mates", but so far, it's not suffocating the story. The plot moves at the perfect pace, not lagging anywhere.Recommend this series!

I LOVE a good fantasy series, and The Warrior Chronicles so far is a series I am really enjoying reading. I've read the first 2 books in the last day and a half, looked at reviews for the others, already downloaded the free epilogue off the authors website for when I finish reading book 6.........I'm a little tempted to read it now, but I'm going to be strong and wait!!The romance in this story REALLY takes a back seat to the action, but you can see the chemistry slowly simmering between Shanti and Cayan ( kind of why I was tempted to read the epilogue, my romance loving brain wants to see what comes of this pair! ). Shanti is really strong, determined, and she is an amazing fighter. Her gift also gives her the added benefit when fighting her enemy of being able to attack them mentally, or block their mental attacks. Cayan sounds like a beast of a man ( in a good way! ). Huge, physically strong and also an amazing fighter - his gift and Shanti's combined may be the difference between life and death. Lots of other characters in this story to keep the readers interest piqued, such as Rohnan. I want more Rohnan in the next book.

This is the 2nd book in the Warrior Chronicles by Breene. There are six books in this series right now. For some reason I didn't enjoy this book quite as much as the first one in the series. The writing was actually less awkward than the first book in the series. Unfortunately, I thought that things moved too slowly and nothing much happened in this book.I listened to this on audiobook and the audiobook was well done. The narrator does a great job with emotion and character voices. In fact I think I probably like listening to this book more than I would enjoy reading it because of the well done narration.The book starts with a brief rescue mission in which Shanti rescues her brother and ends up with a mysterious old man tagging along as well. After that our characters spend the whole book traveling to the Shadowlands and it was predictable and boring.We do meet a couple interesting new characters (mainly Shanti’s brother and the mysterious Old Man). However, the travel was pretty boring and even the battle scenes seemed to have lost their urgency.The story about the Chosen and the Wanderer was expanded on some. The series seems to be building towards some sort of trial that Shanti will have to undergo when they get to the Shadowlands (if they ever get there).Overall this has been a fairly typical fantasy series with a somewhat awkward writing style. I am unsure as to whether or not I will continue the series. When I finished this book I wasn't chomping at the bit to read more about these characters and/or world.

I almost didn't order this book BC some reviewers talked about being SO tiny and the size of their palms. I suppose some people may have huge palms but this book is not all that small. It measures 4.5" tall and 3.75" wide. As for the story itself, it is a great age-appropriate introduction to the story of Easter. Definitely recommend.

I bought this book "used" but in good condition. It was fine when we received it. It was a very nice addition to my grandchildren's Easter basket. I will say that there are several lines on each page to read. It's not overly simple. The size and shape are adorable. It's about 5 inches long and is very nice for children who are reading board-type books. The illustrations are well done and are colorful. We loved it.

This is a cute little book - and I mean little! It's perfect for little hands, though. I gifted it to my one year old grandson and he loves it. Very simple and easy to understand story of Easter for the young ones without being heavy handed on the religion.

I am disappointed in the quality of this book. The illustrations and words are sweet, but my (gentle) one-year-old tore it apart within a month of receiving it. Every other book we own has remained intact, so I believe it was the quality of the binding, not the child's use of it.

This is a great Easter book for a baby--it is true to the spirit and the letter, but focuses on the rebirth (actually leaves death pretty much out of it). For a baby or a young toddler just learning about Easter, it gets the message across in the perfect way!

Precious book for my little granddaughter that shows the real meaning of Easter.
