I was torn between two Catholic Bibles, but thankfully I made the right decision with this absolutely beautiful Douay-Rheims Bible. It has been awhile since I attended Mass, and so I wanted to go back--back to my roots, so to speak. I highly recommend this particular Bible, especially the durable leather bound. If you are going to pay so much for a Bible in the first place, you may as well get the best.

The best Bible I've ever owned. The translation is beautiful and has more depth than any other I've seen. The use of "archaic" language is not a minus; it is a must for the sake of accuracy, and it's not as though you need a college degree to make sense of it. The Bible's physical dimensions make it perfect for holding in one hand while turning pages with the other. The binding is split-leather, which is a step up from the imitation leather-bound Bibles that seem to be common.In comparison to the other two Bibles I own, this Bible is significantly lighter and smaller, likely due to how few annotations grace its pages. Annotations in Bibles are typically a bad thing, as they attempt to interpret the Word of God for you, which is very dangerous as they're not always correct, and there's also usually more to the verse than what the annotation says. If you want insight on a passage of the Bible, talk to a priest or other clergyman. Annotations are an eyesore anyway, and can very easily distract the reader.I've also noticed that despite this Bible being a bit slimmer than my others, it actually has more text. For reference, my other two are NRSV CE and NABRE. In Sirach/The Wisdom of Ben Sira (also known in this Douay-Rheims translation as Ecclesiasticus) 23:27 of the NABRE version it says: "Thus, all who dwell on the earth shall know, all who remain in the world shall understand, That nothing is better than the fear of the Lord, nothing sweeter than obeying the commandments of the Lord." In the NRSV (23:27) it says: "Those who survive her will recognize that nothing is better than the fear of the Lord, and nothing sweeter than to heed the commandments of the Lord." However, in this (D-R) version, it says (23:37): "And they that remain shall know, that there is nothing better than the fear of God: and that there is nothing sweeter than to have regard to the commandments of the Lord." For the first two translations, that verse marks the end of chapter 23 of Ecclesiasticus/Sirach. But for the D-R version, there is one extra verse (23:38): "It is great glory to follow the Lord: for length of days shall be received from him." This verse is not present at all that I can see in my other Bibles. This is a grave matter, because at what point does the Word of God cease being the Word of God? If I remove/change a letter, does that make it no longer the Living Word? How about a word? An entire verse, like in this case? I argue that any removal of text from the Word of God prevents it from being the Word of God.Also, there is no inclusive language in this translation. It has not been tarnished by contemporary movements like feminism. Always a plus.All in all, this is the best Bible translation for any Christian, especially a Catholic, to have. If in doubt, take the plunge.Edit: It has come to my attention that there are a few shortcomings with the construction quality of this Bible. Namely, the binding is glued and not sewn. This impacts the longevity of the book negatively, as glue breaks down over time (and much faster than thread used in sewn bindings). This is still a good Bible to have for its translation, Christ's words in red, and the prayers in the back of the book, but if longevity is what you're looking for you might try Baronius Press' D-R Bibles.

If you are a language nerd like me, you will LOVE this text. It's simply sublime. Genesis 1:2 and 2:7 are worth the price of admission alone for the rational minded evolutionists ("rational minded" here is not said with snobbery or righteousness).The notations and linkings of verses is great. Again this goes back to the language point I made. As for the linking of verses, maybe it's been that long since I've looked at a bible, but I don't remember seeing that before..The definitional index of sacraments and key teachings (ahh purgatory, the one major thing I remember going crazy about at bible study years ago...) and their validity in text is simply an indispensible tool. The photos are beautiful, though the "maps" are criminally undetailed. The timeline is interesting and quite useful as well. The list of popes, prayers, and text listings of feast days, and gospels for holy days makes this an absolutely perfect companion to have as you drag yourself back to mass for the first time in years, or sit in adoration for an hour.I'd suggest the 2 tone "stand firm in the lord" bible case for this. The burgundy, while not my preferred color (literally I ordered the first DR I found that also delivered next or same day), gives the text a proper dignified, and decidedly holy casing. The text size is just right. One minor gripe is there's only one ribbon (I remember catholic bibles as having approximately 35 ribbons all of various colors for all sorts of things), but it is a nice color.And of course, the translation. You simply cannot go wrong reading a Vulgate translation, as I've noted.If nothing else, as I said before, the translation itself is worth the purchase. The text reads so completely differently and is much richer. Also lends itself to some different spellings due to the fact that Latin lacks some written notation for certain sounds (so Noah is Noe and Sarah is Sara and Ham is Cham. My inner linguist drools.)Oh, and "Revelations"? Nope, it's listed here as"The Apocalypse"

Absolutely delighted with this Bible! The type is big enough that I can read it and I'm very impressed with the red-lettering of Jesus Christ's words. My "working" bible, to mark, highlight and scribble, is the Little Rock Study Bible .... this one is my read & think bible. The language is beautiful. It's pricey but at least you're getting something that's worth the money you paid.

High quality. The binding is strong, the cover is nice, and the paper is good quality. The best is that it is the Douay-Rheims for both the new and the old testament. There is not a more accurate translation into the English language than this.

I have nothing negative to say about this Bible. St. Jerome, in the 4th century, translated the Bible into Latin (Vulgate); the Douay-Rheims Bible is the English translation from the Latin Vulgate. So if you want the most accurate and direct translation, as close to the the original manuscripts as possible, this is the Bible for you.

I am a protestant and ordered this Bible so I could read the seven missing books that are not in the King James bible. I will keep this Bible and continue to study the missing books. I especially enjoy reading Ecclesiasticus. The pages are not any thinner than my other Bibles. The font size IS quite small but I use reading glasses once my eyes get strained. Other than the fine print, I'm extremely happy with my purchase.

The subject material is pretty fluffy. Personally I get annoyed by "girly" products that make it seem as if true conflict never exists in a girly world. But I understand the reason for it and the good news about this whole series is that there is very little in there to trouble most parents. The content is whitewashed thoroughly. My daughter has probably read 20 of these books (there are many many many more) from varying series and so far I haven't seen anything to be of concern. And she enjoyed them enough to want to read more - excellent news for the parent of a child who isn't an avid reader!They are good practice for young readers (probably around 1st/2nd grade) but any older than that will not be challenged and will get bored quickly.

My 2nd grader who is a bit ahead in reading had this book finished in 2 nights. This was our first book from this series and she is already asking for another one!

Very cheaply made book.The cover is nice, but the pages are thin like paper from a coloring book. There are no color pictures it is all black and white. Not our favorite book for sure.

This series isn't as good as the others. We didn't even finish them and instead went on to the next one (Weather faries?).

Bought for a birthday gift. 7 year old granddaughter loves this series.

My oldest daughter has always loved to read since a young age. These books were great starters for her skill level.

my daughter loved so much that it make her began to read every evening by herself. good series since there is plenty for her age. they all about the same the fairy have enchanted object that Jack Frost is stilling and 2 human girls help to get back. some word are long that make the reading a little challenging.

My six year old daughter loves every one of these books. They are, by nature, very formulaic, but that's a wonderful thing for encouraging new readers to read longer texts because they are familiar already with the structure of the story. I love the wide variety of topics available and feel that there's something for literally every interest...and enough to spark new interests.

The two popular translations of ‘Crime and Punishment’ before the 1993 translation by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, were by Constance Garnett and David McDuff. The Pevear/Volokhonsky translation became my favourite – until Oliver Ready’s translation came along. Not knowing a word of Russian, I declare my favourite only by the enjoyment I derived from reading the book in English.Many things may indeed be lost in translation, and many others get misrepresented but we may not know. The result of reading only the English versions is that one’s choice is largely subjective. Compared to the Garnett version, the Pevear/Volokhonsky translation seems very modern – until Ready’s came along. Little things like changing ‘had not’ to ‘hadn’t’ renders Ready’s version not only a little more modern but also more informal. That is not to say that the atmosphere of old Russia is lost. Ready uses ‘fibs’ for ‘lies’ (Pevear/Volokhonsky) in one passage.Ultimately, the reader has to decide for himself which style he enjoys more. Here is a comparison from one of my favourite passages (there are many) from the book. I set out first the Pevear/Volokhonsky version then the Ready version:“What do you think?” Razmumikhin shouted, raising his voice even more. “You think it’s because they’re lying? Nonsense! I like it when people lie! Lying is man’s only privilege over all other organisms. If you lie- you get to the truth! Lying is what makes me a man. Not one truth has ever been reached without lying fourteen times or so, maybe a hundred and fourteen, and that’s honourable in its way; well, but we can’t even lie with our minds! Lie to me, but in your own way, and I’ll kiss you for it. Lying in one’s own way is almost better than telling the truth in someone else’s way; in the first case you’re a man, and in the second – no better than a bird. The truth won’t go away, but life can be nailed shut; there are examples. (Pevear/Volokhonsky)‘Now what are you thinking?’ cried Razumikhin, raising even more. ‘That it’s their lies I can’t stand? Nonsense! I like it when people lie. Telling lies is humanity’s sole privilege over other organism. Keep fibbing and you’ll end up with the truth! I’m only human because I lie. No truth’s ever been discovered without fourteen fibs along the way, if not one hundred and fourteen, and there’s honour in that. But our lies aren’t even our own! Lie to me by all means, but make sure it’s your own, and then I’ll kiss you. After all, lies of your own are almost better than someone else’s truth: in the first case you’re human; in the second you’re just a bird! The truth won’t run away, but life just might – wouldn’t be the first time.Ready’s version has a table of chronological events and a fresh, inspiring introduction that will help the first-time reader understand and appreciate the context of ‘Crime and Punishment’

I do not know what my review can add to the Brothers Karamazov, but I will put in a few of my words. I have now read this book six times through and every time I am simply amazed at the complexity of vision that Dostoevsky brought to the page. My copy of the book is littered with page numbers written in the margins that connect the dots between all of the recurring scenes, ideas, images, phrases, and philosophies. It has taken years of sustained thought to be able to draw all of these connections, which makes it somewhat unbelievable that Dostoevsky was able to write it in the time frame that he did. Because of this, though, I have found this translation to be the only reasonable choice for the serious student. Many earlier translations ironed out potentially awkward phrasings, and thereby destroyed the parallelism that was being masterfully established.I have shed so many tears on the pages of my copy of this book that I am surprised it is still holding up as well as it is. There is a sensitivity and beauty to this text that I have never been able to find anywhere else, even in other works by Dostoevsky. It is, quite simply, the most masterful examination of agape (active love), faith, and justice, and redemption that I have ever encountered in my life, in philosophy, history, literature, film, or otherwise. There are no words to offer that can capture how profoundly this book has changed me for the better.

Most people know that The Brothers Karamazov is an amazing novel, so I will only be criticizing the translation; however, I haven't read any other translations to verify my knowledge on the subject, and I would suggest going getting samples of different translations in order to best suit your needs.The Richard Peaver & Larissa Volokhonsky translation of The Brothers Karamazov is good. It's being marketed as the best, but it really isn't. There is not a 'best' translation of Dostoyevsky, or really, any other Russian author I've researched; no, there isn't a 'best' translation of a book that I know of. To my understanding the Peaver translations usually stick incredibly close to the original source material, which is a double edged sword; most people want a translation that doesn't loose something or other in translation. This one is very close to doing so, but as I said it's a double edged sword; they leave in the syntax, and a very foreign syntax at that. This can cause problems for a casual reader, but it wasn't a problem for me. What really matters is the readers personal preference. I will add the first sentence of the P&V, McDuff, and Garnett translations to see which one you'd most like:"Alexei Fyodorovich Karamazov was the third son of a land owner from our district, Fyodor Pavlovich Karamazov, well known is his own day (and still remembered among us) because of his dark and tragic death, which happened exactly thirteen years ago and which I shall speak of in its proper place." - P&V"Aleksey Fyodorovich Karamazov was the third son of a landowner in our district, Fyodor Pavlovich Karamazov, so noted in his time (and even now still recollected among us) for his tragic and fishy death, which occurred just thirteen years ago and which I shall report in its proper context." - McDuff"Alexey Fyodorovich Karamazov was the third son of Fyodor Pavlovich Karamazov, a landowner well known in our district in his own day, and still remembered among us owing to his gloomy and tragic death, which happened thirteen years ago, and which I shall describe in its proper place." - GarnettMoving on to the edition I have. It's ISBN is 978-0374528379, but it is the best selling edition as of 8/1/2017; you probably won't have any trouble finding it. This paperback is a great durable edition. I kept it in my backpack for school each day for basically the entire second semester without too much serious wear (check the photos to judge yourself). The font is big enough to read well without straining your eyes... or at least it was for me. It's still holding together nicely is what I'm trying to say. The binding is glued, too; if you didn't know. This edition has a cover in which I will describe as rough-soft feeling; I enjoyed holding it in my hands.Finally, sorry for the poor camera quality. The soda can piece is there to show how big the text is in comparison. The torn piece on the back is from a mishap I am accountable for not the book, although it says something about the books durability; it happened near the end of my usage with it.
